Default Wheel size, offset, and backspacing question.

It seems the more I search the more dizzying it gets. Rather than a tutorial, I'm hoping someone can just give me the facts I need.

I'm keeping my factory tires.

If the standard wheel is 17x8 offset 53 and I'm looking to stay as close to stock as possible to maintain all original characteristics of the car. What spec ranges should I be considering? Specifically, when I look up my car on Tire Rack I see...

1) 17x7.5 and 17x8. Would either of these suit me for staying at stock performance?

2) Offsets seem to be mostly 45, 48, & some 50. None at 53. Should this concern me?

3) Then they mention backfacing. huh?

I've read about a lot of this but it still seems dizzying. I'm hoping it's not too much to ask for someone just to point me to which of these specs I should stay within to maintain factory look and driving characteristics.

heres a good link that will let you know what changing your wheel width and offset will do compared to what you have. as far as inboard and outboard clearance.

http://kgm.tiwing.com/calcs/offsetcalc.htm

this is a good link that has a tire size calculator so you can see exactly what you're changing relative to stock. (though i see you mentioned you're not changing the tires) good reference anyway.

http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html

i understand your original question but AFAIK keeping the offset close to stock will keep steering feel as-is. 50 is close enough. the further you venture from that will affect your scrub radius and give heavier steering feel. if it matters i went from the stock 17x8 +53, to 17x10 +38 its been like that for awhile, and i can't even remember what the original steering feel was like. though its not objectionably bad, and my car is used for autox and HPDE.

sorry for my long winded answer but i imagine even a 17x8 +45 would be just fine if thats what you're asking. i wouldn't go narrower than stock, as i saw you mentioned 17x7.5.

It was interesting that when entering info specifically for my car Tire Rack didn't show any 53 offset, mostly 45 and 48 with a few at 50. As mentioned they showed 7.5 as well as 8" as a match. anything about the 'backspace'

So if I understand this right that, a 45 or 48 offset will stick out further than my standard 53?

Yes, I know that A = A, that would be my first choice, but tire rack didn't seem to have any 53 offset.

Anything within eyesight of that is fine. 42-50 would be perfectly acceptable for an 8" wheel.

This seems about as good a place as any to ask this. I've been looking around for a couple hours now trying to figure out first of all if its possible with no rolling, pulling, etc. to run 17x9 (I'm looking at rota torque's) rims with a nice wide tire on my '06 impreza sedan. From what I've read 255 would be impossible with no work (and expensive too) but 235 and 245 seem doable. Right now I have sparco tarmacs 17x8 (not sure the offset... 48+ maybe?) with 225/45/17 and there seems to be plenty of room. I want to go a bit wider if I can cuz, well I like the look of wide tires and wheels lol. Has anyone used a wheel set up like this on a stock height impreza that can shed some light on this? I'm thinking 235/40/17 for the tire size. Will this fit with no rubbing or anything of the sort? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

just for visual, the difference would be very minor. you need to pay very close attention. anything above a 8mm difference you would start to notice more.

to get an exact measurement would be your best bet. i got lucky on my daily car, honda. its basically exact to the control arm with these acura wheels. when the wheel is mounted its literally has 1mm spacing. now i really could have just left the fenders alone but for safety i rolled them. why take chances.
the honda normally runs 14x5.5 but now its 17x8 and doesnt stick out at all.

im not sure why you dont want to roll the fenders?

I wasn't entirely sure how to get an exact measurement. From eyeballing it, there's not a whole lot of room left between the tire and the wheel well with the wheel turned all the way. Enough that I could probably run a bit wider though. And I've still got another inch or maybe more before the top of the wheels are flush with the fenders. I figured I could probably get by with a 17x8.5 with a 235. 17x9 is probably pushing it. But rather then shop for new wheels and tires I decided to just stay with 17x8 and just get rims I'm happier with. As far as not wanting to roll the fenders, well. I've spent much more money on a NA impreza than many would be willing to lol I want to it look good/sound good and that'll keep me happy until I have a big both job and can afford a wrx or sti. Wider tires would be sweet but I've read that eventually you'll start messing with the gearing if you go too big and lose low end torque (which I already don't have much lol). I deliver pizzas so I don't want to get really into a tire/wheel/suspension set up only to destroy it within a few months lol. 17x8 on a Honda sounds crazy lol how much sidewall is actually on those tires?
