Default EG33 (H6)/Impreza Swap

Alright, well I'm going to be swapping an EG33 (H6 or Flat 6) engine from a 1992 SVX into a 1995 Impreza GF. This is basically the old school big block 6 cylinder engine from FMI.

There are newer, lighter, and in my opinion more complicated engines out there in the 6 cylinder category such as the EZ30D or EZ30R, but this one is pretty straight forward as far as engine swaps go. Of course I call them complicated because they are harder to wire up (especially the EZ30R) so for a metal gear head like me that stuff can get confusing.

I chose the EG33 because the wiring is much more simple and the fitment is the hard part. The EG33 is a big engine that requires some engine bay modifications in order to fit. For me that is less of a hurdle than wiring up a spliced harness since I can fabricate. However, this is not a "plug and play" set up either. Be prepared to spend some time (a lot of it) looking at wiring diagrams. I did this and decided to have a member on here (numbchux) whip up a harness for me.

So the following thread will be composed of my findings throughout the process of the swap. I wanted to do this since the "Official H6 Thread has a more EZ friendly focus compared to EG. (Still read that thread tough).

P.S.-This thread is basically focused on a stock swap straight across. I am not doing a full on build because I am short on time and money. The fun stuff will come down the road.

Well, Enjoy!

I'll try. Brought the SVX home last night and will be breaking things down soon. Still trying to decide what I want to use for a radiator so we'll see where that goes.

Are you looking into a swap like this?

^^^^Nice. I wanted a newer (OBDII) engine myself, but couldn't find one in my area.

Yeah I've looked at that one a lot too. There are a couple decent threads if you do a search, but that one in particular is really helpfull because a lot of guys are doing the EZ30 on here. Be sure to keep me updated. Have you decided on a radiator/fan set up yet?

I just started taking apart the SVX 2 nights ago and will be pulling the engine out in a day or so. I'll be sure to post lots of pics. I keep doubting if that thing is gonna fit! Its massive!

I'm working on an engine swap too.

My car is one Impreza MY93 1.6 FWD face lifted to MY00 WRX.

Many modifications since I begin working on this car about 4 years ago. Prodrive suspension, AWD conversion, Apexi exhaust, many others...

Wiring is one important issue, but I'm doing the job by my self once I have a good electronics background - the new wiring harness is almost ready, just a few wires to hook-up.

Here my car's blog - unfortunately in Portuguese yet http://prodrivebr.blogspot.com

cool beans! I would suggest reasearching spring rates for the fronts, because the added wieght messes with the front end a bit. nothing stiffer rates can't fix.

the wiring is simple, don't worry!

I've got a super stiff cusco suspension on it now so I'm not real concerned with that. Especially since I'll be canning the AC and if needed maybe move the battery to the back. What are you gonna be running for suspension?

I just need more time to work on this thing! Gotta love working full time for the man.

Hey,
I've done this swap and can say the EG33 is a true monster.
Wiring for me took some time but it you have the patience the payout is nice! I ran the stock suspension but my legacy was always FWD so she always was heavy in the nose... Didn't notice much difference in the handling. I'll post the link to the thread I made. I tried making a thourough walkthrough for it... Good luck!
