Default Foglights went out

My fog lights won't turn on for me and the fog light illumination on the dash board does not turn on either. I have a 2013 Subaru Impreza Sport Limited Hatchback and I've only got about 1,700 miles on it. I was 2 hours into a road trip when I pulled over to get gas. Had my headlights and fog lights on. When I pulled out after getting gas, the fog lights went out and did not turn back on. Has this happened any one else? Is it possible there was a short in the circuit or I need to replace the fuse?

Thanks for the replies guys! How would I know if there was a fuse issue? If there was an issue, do I just replace it? Also it may have just been overheating? The car sat for about 10 hours while I was at work and when I came out afterwards, the fog lights were working again, as well as the dash board fog light illumination light.

Well, if the fogs working again, then it's not a fuse issue.

Were your lights on High Beam If so the fogs are disabled.

Yeah I think the lights may have overheated? The high beams were not on. In the situation though if there was a fuse issue, how would I know a fuse blew? I'm a noob at this!

Pull the fuse out and look at it. There is a metal strip inside that connects the two ends. If too much current runs through the strip, it breaks. This prevents your electronics on the circuit with the fuse from blowing up.

a bad fuse can look like a good fuse, so the best way to test if it is the fuse is to swap with a new one. Sometimes a bad fuse if obvious, but I learned a long time ago that one may look good, and not be... sometimes the contacts break/not burn and visually checking it misses the failure.

Fuses are not self repairing nor are they circuit breakers that will reset. At 1700 miles I'd report it to the dealer to get it on record.

Yip- I've seen fuses even test ok, but after long run they act like a blown fuse. Not sure if it was a defect in fuse or not, but heat does crazy things. Could be a fluke ground issue as well. Electronics can do weird things sometimes.

Also, any cheap ohmmeter would confirm that a fuse is good or bad.

When I left for work today, the fog lights were out again, same with the illumination on the dashboard. When I left work about 9 hours later, they came back on, same with the illumination. I don't get it!

I feel really stupid but didn't know this.

The reason my fog lights wouldn't turn on was because I always leave my headlights set to auto. Because the amount of daylight was enough to not have the headlights on except for the daytime running lights, the fog lights won't turn on. The fog lights only seem to turn on if my headlights are on.

This is why the fog lights work when I leave work. It's night time when I get off. There's enough day light when I go to work so the fog lights don't turn on. Sigh. The reason why my fog lights went out during the trip was because there was enough daylight for my lights to go to day time running.

Well, at least it isn't an issue. I'm so relieved! Thanks everyone!

wow, glad you figured that out, I don't have the auto headlight feature, so I never would have thought of that...

Same here. I knew where the OP was going as soon as he mentioned having his headlights in AUTO because my wife's Toyota Highlander works like that. But my Impreza doesn't have AUTO headlights, so it never occurred to me in this context.
