Default Turbo failures

So my TD04 went shortly after going stage 2 on my 2002 at 51,000 miles back in March and I replaced it with a blouch 16g XT. Fast forward 4 months and 1700 miles and the 16g XT is dead as well. I have no smoke coming from the exhaust I'm not losing coolant or burning oil either. My compression was still 160psi and I'm getting between 20-25psi at idle and 65-85 psi cruising on my oil pressure gauge.

Is there anything I should be looking for that could cause these failures? I don't want to put another turbo on there to just have t fail again as well.

Edit to add mods.
Mods: All mods have been tuned for.
Turbo inlet
Grimmspeed EBCS

Might be a no-brainer, but did you remove the cat from your uppipe? I could see it breaking apart, harming the TD04 (known issue). If you don't replace it with a de-catted uppipe, more parts might harm the 16G.

What do you mean by "dead"? bad seals or what?

And can you give us a basic list of what other mods you are using?

3 port ebcs?
Protune?
etc...

It's doesn't boost at all, There is no oil in my intake or in the hot/cold sides of the turbo. There is also no shaft play or damage to the wheels.

Did you replace your TD with a brand new 16 and/or did you reuse the OEM oil line/filter or use the new Blouch oil feed lines?

http://store.forcedperformance.net/m.../02-103-07.pdf

A little explanation about the filter from a TSB

I used new Blouch linesand turbo, my car didn't have the banjo bolt screens when I swapped in the 16g XT. I also pre-filled the turbo and primed it in bursts of 15-20 seconds with the ignition fuse pulled for a few mins before I fired it up and let it idle for 30 mins.

a turbo is a very simple part, theres really only a couple things that could be wrong.

1: oil starvation

2: wheels touched housings

3: unbalanced shaft/wheel resulted in worn bearings

you should pull the turbo off and post pictures. i rebuild my turbo ALL the time because i get rebuild kits for nearly free, and just to inspect. during the last rebuild (basically only for inspection) i found debris that was in the oil but too large to enter the bearings. looked like dry red loc tite to me. it didnt kill the turbo but was proof there was foreign objects in the oil. one time i bought a 20G turbo that had an 18G wheel in it and i didnt notice. went to the tuner and fell 80hp shy of my goal. yank it and post pics!

Maybe the 5w40 in my car has something to do with it? I don't make very long trips but I normally let the car warm up to operating temps before I leave so maybe it's to thick starving the turbo of oil until it gets up to operating temps.

Anyone have an opinion on this, I won't be back home for a few day due to work so I won't have a change to get at the turbo until Monday at the earliest.

You said no shaft play, etc. It spins freely?

Wastegate issue?

I would seriously doubt the 5w-40 is causing issues as so many people run it in their cars w/o problems, myself for one. With 2 of them going down so quick and no filter inline, my guess would be foreign matter.

http://www.blouchturbo.com/turbofacts-2.html

I looked for info about the filter and if it should be in place on a 16 but could not find definite answers. On OEM, yes.

the turbo spins freely and makes 0 boost ? could only be a waste gate proplem or a serious boost leak (split hose to intercooler? ) maybe a blow off valve stuck open

Did you check to see that the compressor and turbine wheels both spin? Never heard of it before, but maybe the shaft broke and only one side will spin now........

My trip got cancelled so I had free time and tore into it this morning and may have found the problem, I'll know for sure after I get back from the long traffic filled quest to Perrin to pick up a new turbo inlet hose since the one that is on there now has 3+ tears/holes in it.

I already replaced the inlet once with a generic silicone piece, I was in a pinch and that was all I could get in town at the time, Lesson learned buy once and wait instead of rush to get it back together.

I'm also borrowing a good working BPV to see if that is also an issue or not. The shop that put my EWG on wants me to bring it buy and look at the gate as well. I can' log the EWG with my open source tune since it doesn't show up in my WGDC tables.

Well the new inlet didn't help nor did the other BPV I tired. I have a day off so I'm taking it in to my tuner tomorrow to have then inspect the EWG and do another boost leak/smoke test.

I think you are looking at this the wrong way around

ya got an exhaust issue or the wg is stuck open...or ya got a charge pipe issue

This^

Did you boost leak test it? Usually a turbo failure will have shaft play, oil in exhaust and intake and tons of smoke. I'm willing to bet you have a lesser issue, like a torn silicone connector, or something of that nature.

After a couple of hours at the tuners we think its a clogged cat, they pulled it and the car spools just fine without it.

I'm running a TurboXS stealth back and have only had it on the car for 2200 miles. What would cause a cat to clog so fast? My tune still checks out so I don't think that would cause it.

That didn't last long. The car went right back to not boosting 30 miles later. I'm done with this car no one in town can figure out what's wrong with it.

There are some things that you can still check on.

Did you check that the EWG is actually closed?
Can you try totally blocking off the BPV?
Pressure tested system from the turbo intake?
Clogged air filter (yes, seen it twice - once it was water/mud in the filter and once it was a cheap pod filter that got almost totally blocked after a few months)
Any other cats still in the car?

Cobb Tuning Surgeline got it sorted out for me. They found several holes in my vacuum lines and a ghetto fab BPV line that I overlooked. Needles to say I will be switching tuners since my current one just seems to have taken my money and not preformed the diagnostics that I paid them for :/
