misfires at idle. probably about 1-2 times per week. never does it when driving normal. ive changed plugs, injectors (have not changed coil packs), and still happens. either cylinder 1 or 4 most of the time.

cant figure it out, have no idea. really irritating but have been living with it.

i am in for an answer if you figure it out.
The difference here is that are you sure it goes away when its driving? Its true that it might smooth out when at higher rpms but does it go away completely?

Because im certain my car continues to misfire no matter how i am driving it, then out of no where it will go away, then come back, then go away, then come back and stay for a really long time

I agree with the wiring thing. What concerns me the most is why it would have melted in the first place. ill mention it to the shop. It has got to be electrical as opposed to mechanical because the car runs great when the misfire decides to go away, it is not as if something is broken or something....? LEAK down was good.

More updates later on this week when the shop gets a look at it again.

Update:

Alright guys so I got my car back Tuesday and they replaced the Cam gear and the AVCS solenoid, and i think did the timing.

The misfire is gone so far. Drove to work and back. I do have to say I have noted a slight shudder every couple seconds or so. Nothing violent but I can feel it in my seat. Leak down and compression tests were good so i dont imagine it to be anything serious.

I do feel however, that my car is noticeably slower? Maybe its just me.

On a side note, I am running stock suspension and I feel like this thing corners like crap. I took a corner today behind a stock GTI and he had no problem staying between the white lines but I thought my trunk was about to lift off the ground (i am exaggerating of course) I thought wrx's were supposed to handle well....

I just figured out I have a crack in my up pipe so that's very possible it could be related. I will share my findings whether it still occurs once that is fixed.

Yes, my misfire is 90% of the time at idle. It has misfired before on cruise but not in a long time.

I hope the work they did will fix your issue

WRX handle well for what they were designed for. In stock form its not gonna keep up with coupes / specifically designed sports cars. With a few mods you'll keep up no problem

i had a MK2 gti and the handling of that car makes my wrx feel like a catamaran. Kinda disappointing.

Did you ever do a leak-down lest? That'd be a little more definitive than the compression test.

I had low compression on cylinders 2-4. 80 psi in cylinder 2, and 110 in cylinder 4.
Did a leakdown test and got back a higher leakdown % in cylinder 2.

leakdown came back "good" said the mechanic.

Maybe ill just changed all the plugs this weekend. I really only notice the shudder when the engine is cold. Any ideas?

Also any recommendations for fuel injectors. I want to get this car running smooth, as it is not very smooth at the moment

Car is still running well. Changed the plugs the other day and the small shudder at idle persists..

looks like changing the cam gear did it.

Try cleaning or replacing the crank position sensor. It's cheap and easy to get to.

ok more problems HOORAY! This is seriously the worst car ive ever owned and I have owned some very very ****ty cars.

So got a CEL the other day. PO420, O2 sensors. Replaced them. No CEL for a day. Then CEL came back. I go to autozone and now the computer diagnostic plug in will not give power to the diagnostic computer. SO.

First question: is there a fuse that goes to the diagnostics outlet under the steering wheel. If not do I have a loose connection or something?

Question two: ONCE I am able to read the code, if it is the same PO420 catalyst inneficiency code and i need to replace my cat, are there any inexpensive cats that still do the job well enough to pass emissions?

Thanks guys

I think there are some serious electrical issues with the car. The signs are all there...

I commend you for your optimism, but for $3k you had to know what you were getting yourself into. That's a $15k car.

That's called the OBDII port, and i'm not aware of a fuse for it. It's likely tied into another console fuse.

Try 25 new (assuming base model), and about 18 - 20 (assuming good condition -- say he fixes whatever is wrong) at this point

Ive had rough idle in my 06 and the only codes ive thrown are camshaft sensor (fixed under warrenty)
They replaced oil line solenoids that go to the turbo...
And i was getting 2 transmission codes and had them cleared 3 times in two months and havent had them since. I attribute it to ripping me off sometimes thats why ill have them clear it.....my shifts are buttery smooth. Why would i believe a light thats telling me something is wrong but i have no issues? Hmmmm EFF you check engine light and cruise control lol.

And yes our cars handle like complete crap when the stock suspension is past 85k miles lol.
Get some new struts and springs n youll be good. New sways and endlinks will help substantially to kickin the gti's little sub 2liter butt.

I had my cam shaft sensor replaced as well. Still a little shudder at idle, It makes me not trust my car.

I am glad im not the only one who thinks these cars handle like crap. I took a corner at like 25 mph today and thought I was going to be in the bushes.

Also an update. Code came back (what an effing surprise) for about two days. Made an appointment to bring it in. Then on my way home from work I gunned it for some reason or another and the CEL just went off all by itself. What thah helll!

I am also curious about another thing. If a car is driven on a misfire (which it was by previous owners) could this have detrimental effects on the catalytic converter. Ive gotten a few emissions codes and I feel like my exhaust is restricted. The car revs up fine but it just feels like its more bogged down than it should be.

Yes. A misfiring car will dump unburnt fuel into the cat.

Look on ksl for used parts, or the junkyard, I'm sure you can find an oem downpipe for cheaper than the dealership.

Isn't it against federal law to sell a used dp with cat retail? Does this include junkyards?

If you want to spend 8-900 bucks on a new oem downpipe be my guest. People sell their stock downpipes all the time, if you buy one with cash and install it, who is going to say anything about it?
