Well i have several years experience with kenwood. Right now i have a Kenwood eXcelon KDC-X996 dead unit and love it. The blue tooth feature is awesome so you can answer calls without ever having to pick up your phone.

What do you want out of a HU?

If you want bluetooth, Kenwood just because of price and you don't have to buy additional equipment.

Personally, I've had both and I have also chosen Alpine over Kenwood. Although in this case, I would go with the Kenwood. I don't know if you are looking to run an amp but the Kenwood has a higher pre-out voltage which means it provides a stronger signal.

I like the simplistic look of the Alpine. It doesn't have all the brand labels on it like "HD Radio" or "Pandora" all over the face plate...

Comparing only those two models specifically ---

Excelon:
- 3 preouts
- Builtin EQ, crossovers, time alignment
- Better EQ (more bands, can usually offload to iPod EQ if preferred)
- FAST USB/iPod browsing
- Good bluetooth
- Only downside is there are alot of knobs you can turn to either amaze or annoy you

Alpine:
- Good bluetooth
- Higher power output if not using an amp
- usb/ipod browsing is a crapton slower than Kenwood
- sounds like garbage to the discerning enthusiast and you cannot tune unless you spend a lot of $$$ on the overpriced imprint (or external components)
- easier to use
- 3 band EQ is terrible
- costs significantly more

I've had a number of Kenwood/Alpine units over the past 15 years. Ever since imprint came out, I would have to side with Excelon.

Im just looking for a good radio that will give me better audio and be able to hook my phone up to listen to music. If i need to take a call in the car i usually put an ear bud in...

I installed an Alpine INA-W900 in my EVO X and it will be my last Alpine as the bluetooth was buggy and Alpine is brutal when it comes to updates. Also it really lacked customizability for top of the line (at that time) deck. Maybe their newer decks are more reliable but I don't see the point of going with Alpine when Kenwood and Pioneer offer superior decks.

i just got a lower model kenwood DDX470, and I love the thing. Bluetooth works fine. I loved my alpine type-r but other than their subs I find their products to be overpriced. But everyone has their opinion.

The Alpine would be my choice, if only because that Kenwood is so horribly ugly.

Though I'd recommend a Pioneer over either.

I have a kdc x794 and I've found it to be an excellent head unit. The options for customizing the sound quality and crossovers are extensive. I exclusively use it to stream Pandora One and simultaneously run Waze through my iphone. I've owned several Pioneer, Sony, and even a Panasonic unit before and this Kenwood has been the best of all.

Hey lax,
I'm actually in the market of selling my kenwood excelon x997 HU. Might be able to cut you a better deal than a x797...

I truly love the deck but i won it at an auction at some local subie meet and now deciding to go with a DVD/nav deck... I do a lot more driving and a GPS+ backup camera seems a bit. More appealing. PM if your interested.
