My map made yesterday was way to lean. So here is my new one made tonight and a few of the last tuning runs on the street to dial it in. These were very low RPM mostly high gear pull's which should have shown any knock.

No Timing pulled on this one, I've learned to ignore the knock count and go
by the Mod IGN and looking for Timing Retard to determine where to tune.

Your maps are starting to look better.
You might need to adjust your timing curve a bit. In our cars we let the "dip" happen as the car is building full boost. This will help you tune out that little low RPM knock that you seem to be getting every so often. -Nathan www.turboxs.com |

Gotta give you a big thumbs up for your efforts. I have a few questions? - What kind of air circulation did you have while your car was strapped to the Dyno? (Over intercooler) - what H2O temp did you see in comparison to what you are seeing during these "on the road" tweaks? TurboXS guys please help w/ next questions: - Superior airflow (on the road) on both counts would add to our margin of safety - no? - Are the obvious knock events seen ( pulled timing on your logs) not significant enough to register a "count" - should this be a matter of concern? My H2O temps were around 98 degrees during the dyno runs, there were two monster fans blowing at my car from the front. I'm sure it wasn't enough for the TMI to shine at all but it was better than nothing.
I will try to answer about the knock events as well. The UTEC engine management has priority over logging by far. So, the UTEC will detect and correct knock (still flashes CEL even if not in a log) and when logging you will see it by looking at the "Mod IGN" column. If you compare the RPM range in the "Mod IGN" and scroll to look for a fluctuation that is not in the "Timing Table" in the map then right before that was a knock event. You will see minor events pull 2 degrees and it will keep pulling based on how bad the event was. So, in short I pretty much ignore the knock column now and focus on the "Mod IGN" column and look for Timing that was not in my mapped timing table. Look at the last two run logs in this thread and at the top it tell's you where the knock happend (I posted it), then go look at my timing table in the map I posted in this thread. You will see the variance. Another thread of mine for the Dyno plot's will show you what a knock/timing retard will do. Look at that thread and scope out the Before/After Dyno plot. At the peak power range it looks like a dip in the torque and a bite out of the HP chart. Hope that helps! Shawn |

hey Shawn, just curious, I've noticed alot of logs showing the a/f ratio as just rich, is that something that needs to be tuned out or is that okay. What exactly does that mean, is it too rich for our O2 sensors to read? Maybe I missed this somewhere, bear with me my learning curve is pretty steep.jk

I have been told that the WRX / UTEC should be tuned "Rich" somewhat, as in 10.5:1 ish. On the dyno we pulled it to 11.5-12:1 which was WAY too lean. I lost my bottom end by leaning it out too much.
I'm still trying to figure out why the A/F reading show Rich or Lean, I assume it is because the front O2 sensor is not a true wideband and it's just letting you know things are copecetic. Shawn |

So I guess your saying tunig on a stock o2 sensor is kind od a half ass way of doing things? Not saying anything by this, I'm just trying to understand that's all. I'm guessing to be truly accurate you would need to use a true wideband o2 sensor. thanks for your help-James

In short, yes:-). However, after the Dyno runs I now pretty much know where the A/F sit's so I'm perfectly happy because I am only richening it up.

Shawn, FYI - To get that low end off boost power back we leaned the map out down low (the 500 - 2000 RPM ranges). Then we richened it up high. Remember the dyno shop thought it was too lean down there but they were wrong... Strange they thought it was OK to run so lean in the 4000 to 7000 RPM range.

Yup, I richend it RIGHT back up the other night. Made a world of difference.
NOW, I need to figure out what kind of timing I can get away with for the low end. For Auto-X ing I REALLY need that low end pre-spool as much as possible. Any suggestions? Shawn |
