Default Compass360 running 2 STIs in Conti GS next year

http://www.grand-am.com/News/GA_News...s-in-2014.aspx

Looks like the C360 guys (who have been very successful with Hondas in ST) are going to run 2 STIs in the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge GS class next season. I'm excited to see what they can do with the car and whether they can make it competitive among the V8 powered cars.

Cool! Interesting that they are starting with the last model year of GR? Hopefully it inspires some more track parts for our cars.

This is good to hear! Seems like they were just getting ready to break out when the plug got pulled.

Great news and the cars look good! They are a great time and hopefully they can make the 2 sti's work the first year! GS is a hard class but with subaru's traction, and with some good engineering, could def. be a podium car!

This one took me by suprise. I wonder if it is customer driven that they run the subarus? Esp with no factory support.

Has Compass 360 been in GS before? maybe it was just a good way to jump into a field with existing cars started already?

Grand am and ALMS are merging so I assume some teams are looking to build new stuff to meet class regs. IE: Whelen Vettes are gone, Curran is in prototypes now (or at least last i saw he was testing)

yea, I knew about the vette's. They were for sale a little while ago, actually.

But my question is why pheonix is letting their STI's go. did their partnership with Subaru finally dissolve? are they even racing next year?

Yeah Subaru pulled all motorsports backing... track sponsorships, factory support, etc.

I haven't heard anything new if they are planning to invest going further.

I applaud Compass 360 taking the leap to the GS class and using the STI as their car. Unfortunately I don't think it's a very competitive car in the class. It's under powered (per Grand Am rules) and if you think about it, just does not belong. If you look at the GS line up, you see a bunch of V8 monsters (Austin Martin,BMW M3, Mustang & Camero) a high revving Porsche flat 6 and an odd ball Nissan 370Z.

How the hell does a pimped up basic economy car (Impreza) compete against cars like this? The STI is bad ass for what it is, but its just simply not as good as a dedicated RWD sports car platform.

On the flip side, how many Autsin Martin's to you see at the base of the ski resort in the middle of winter? That's what the turbo Subies are really all about IMO. Great daily drivers with a healthy amount of performance.

It competes because there are rules. The STI will be allowed similar power with higher weight, but docked some performance based on AWD and it's dominance in the rain. They've been doing this for as long as racing has been around :P

I also think c360 is a "better" team as far as developing chassis, and negotiating with SCCA. I hate to throw pheonix under the bus, but I was never sure how a corvette setup shop got Subaru factory backing. Its like they prepared the STI's only to show up and race. They never seemed to really be into the series and i understand why. They had other customers to deal with at home and other racing to do... I think c360 will "grease some palms" and get the sti in a good place.

Power was never the issue with the STI's in GS. They are allowed to run a lot of boost, and were frequently the fastest cars in a straight line. There were several races that they set the fastest lap of the race at. The primary issue was reliability.

The Nissan 370Z is allowed a ton of internal engine mods that most of the other cars don't get. They also have an 8800 RPM limit that Doran uses all of. They have set a few overall fastest race laps this year, and again, straight line speed has not been their problem.

With the Grand-Am/ALMS merger, it has been announced that most of the ALMS and Grand Am support series, including CTSCC, will remain pretty much unchanged next year. The biggest CTSCC changes will likely be the schedule and making it so that you can't have 2 pro drivers in a car.

http://www.grand-am.com/News/GA_News...cid=6384&sid=2

It hasn't been officially announced yet, but it will be extraordinarily likely that all of the CTSCC races will be broadcast on Fox Sports 1 or Fox Sports 2 next year.

The AWD Volvos run in the GT class in the Pirelli World Challenge series. Those cars are not anywhere as close to as stock as the CTSCC cars are. The PWC GT cars run lap times very close to those of the Rolex GT cars.

I'm aware where the Volvos race. Just stating that they are competitive unlike the subies. I agree that it was mostly reliability
