Default Speedo issues

So i have been having issues with a glitchy temp gauge and tach on my gauge cluster. Today my speedometer doesnt work at all. How common is it for the entire cluster to go out? Should i be concerned about wiring or mechanical?

Need a little help in this. I have checked the ECU wiring in which i found an open tach wire just laying on the panel begging to short out my cluster. I can tap on the glass sometimes and get the tach to respond for a second, i tap in the temp part and itll move up to a hair above low and sit. If i rev the car the tach will stick at 6k RPM so i can turn the car off, then back on and it still sits at 6K (doesnt reset) unless i hit the glass. Something is super funky and with it being more then one thing i am in to believing its the cluster it self.

You either have a ****ed cluster or a couple of loose connectors.

Is it common for the speedo to have issues? Or is this a one in a million problem.

How long have you owned the car? It sounds like a previous owner mangled the ECU wiring (installing a turbo timer, remote start, who knows), didn't put it back properly, and now you're stuck cleaning up the mess.

Ive owned it for almost a year. As it turns out my Speedo Gear inside the transmission gear box is busted. Common Symptoms are speedo not working and miles not rolling over with a CEL that puts the car in limp mode. Awesome.... I dont have the time to rip my tranny apart and fix this. Well time to sell the parts i got to get the transmission fixed.

I had luck with this in my 04 sti- $175 , wire it into a rear wheel abs sensor and use that to create a vehicle speed.

cleared up the check engine/limp mode issues I had with a broken speedo gear.

good people over there.

Looked into that. My only concern with this is the gear coming apart inside the transmission and causing tranny issues.

ok i replaced the cluster and still a dead speedometer. Looked into a VSS and its 100$ from a parts store only issues is finding info with pictures on replacing it. Found Ken Gilberts manual for 02-03 but everything i read is dropping the tranny to do the sensor not the gear. Anyone else have any info DIY's or something with pictures on doing a 2003 WRX VSS? Thanks!

Anyone? Is there a way to test maybe the sensor it self like connection to see if it is 100% the sensor or gear. Currently looking for all options and all i can come up with is replacing the VSS but i have to drop the tranny so i might as well do the gear while i was there.

Instead of creating a new thread ill just reuse this one. Still no speedo after replacing the cluster and now im looking into replacing the VSS on top of the transmission (57$ from RockAuto). Anyone know if there is a DIY on replacing the gear, because i have a pretty good feeling its not the VSS but in fact the gear.

Check the sensor by the DP o/2 sensor. Mine stopped working yesterday. Just went loose. There are 2 speedometer sensors check both. Google for pics of where they are located and reassure that the connections are ok.
