Post Impreza 2012 2.0i-L blog

Hi everybody,

It's been a long time coming but I figured I'd finally start up a blog about my Impreza and my impressions from it overt the last 10 or so months. Mostly doing this to vent some of my frustration with some of the issues and also hoping that people like myself, considering buying a new Impreza would find the information in it remotely useful. It's pretty small right now, but I will be adding more info over the next few days.

All these issues must be with early cars since I dont seem to have any issues with my 2013. It might be too early tho. You are kind of scarring me now.

Sorry to hear that most of your toughts are negative, or at least bent around the squeeks.

Before bying my 2013 I drove my mom's 2012 and noticed a squeek a couple inches to the left of my head. I notice this same thing from time to time in my car, think it's part of the seatbelt mechanism...

Good luck getting rid of them!

On my car, it comes from the seal on the left rear door. Try shoving a rag between the door and the seal and see if the noise goes away.

Interesting, will give that a shot before my next outing. Thanks for the tip!

My only squeak is from the front right dash top speaker cover. But it's only on really cold mornings so I haven't done anything about it.

I can agree this car isn't perfect but I'd be pretty upset too if mine had that many issues.

Yeh.. I can't say I'm too happy about it. It's a real shame I think since all of the interior issues spoil what would have potentially been a pleasant experience :/ (- the engine stalling of course).

Talking to a few people about it gives me an impression that this sort of interior trouble is 'expected' from Subaru. Not really good enough imo.

Hope you guys won't have as much pain as I've had!

Taking it back to the dealer for the 7th time tomorrow to have them try to (once again) fix some of the rattles. Took some videos in the meantime:

Ya, that right dash speaker is the most annoying on on long road trips. Mine came from the clip between the speaker cover and the A pillar. A toothpick in the right place kept it from rattling, though probably a little felt would be a better permanent solution.

A few notes about your car, compared to my impressions. It appears you are an AU customer, which means you have the 6mt. I know a lot of us were jealous of buyers in other markets when we failed to get the 6, but it sounds like overall, this car performs worse on the 6 than the 5mt we have stateside (other than mileage). This to start with is unfortunate. I have almost 9k miles on mine and haven't noticed any recurring rattles save one minor one I've yet to isolate, but it only happens at highway speeds and is relatively quiet, so I'm not concerned. I have heard a lot of complaints about rattles though so is it possible you got an early production model?

With respect to the acceleration, it's really not bad into 3rd gear with the 5mt, especially in the cold, can't say much for the 6mt though. Another positive note you may want to keep in mind, with an upgraded sway bar this car will mostly outperform any other car in it's class when cornering, so that's something to be happy about. It's a cheap and amazingly easy upgrade that really does benefit the vehicle in every way.

In any event, thanks for writing up your review and blog, it's helpful to potential buyers and current owners as well.

I am from Australia indeed!

I'm not really fussed about whether it's a 6 or a 5 speed to be honest - one will give slightly better mileage, but the other will probably be a bit nicer to drive? (less shifting). Drove my dad's fiesta which is 5-speed and really can't notice all that much difference after a few hours of driving - so I recon you didn't really miss out on much

I might have got an early '12 model, but that still is not much of an explanation for the horrid interior (seriously - worst interior quality I've ever known in any car I've ever been in).

In respect to the sway bar - never really considered it - is it really worth it? I recon the first thing I would upgrade (which I probably won't bother with as I'm not sure on how long I will keep the impreza) is the seats - some nicer front seats with "tighter/better" side support to stop me and the passenger sliding around too much in turns would be awesome, but the price for that would be too much :/

I'll keep the blog going and note down any other positives/negatives with the car as I encounter them

Picked up a 19mm Perrin Adjustable from a member here for a good price. Install was... not simply reverse of taking off the stock bar off. To make it smooth I would have had to remove a couple other parts, but just decided to kind of shove it in. May have scratched the powder coat a little, but saved me time and frustration.

Basically... Its awesome. I'd like to change to a "tighter" slot for experimentation, but after turning the wheel so far already I can feel it start to pull. I think any tighter and it would pull too soon (oversteer).

Your 6 speed has the exact same ratios as our 5speed with the exception of the obvious one...6th.

Oh you have no idea. I'm running at 22mm, which is a bit big, and depends on what you're after. The 19mm is what the car should have come with, it's almost a requirement really. This simple, and cheap modification completely transforms the car from a good handler to one of the best in its class. With the 19mm you won't really notice any difference in ride comfort but body roll and understeer will be significantly reduced. With the 22mm ride comfort is slightly sacrificed, not really enough to matter though. Makes the cars ride feel a little more sporty as you know what's going on underneath it better, turn in is dramatically improved, understeer is, for the most part, eliminated, and body roll is pretty much eliminated as well except at the most extreme limits of the cars handling. Take your pick of what matters more to you, but at the very least do the 19mm. The 22 may require upgraded endlinks. I'm still using stock endlinks after a few months with no issues but there is no guarantee they will last, whereas the 19mm shouldn't really have any effect on them at all.
