Default Noob question

my friend bought an sti a couple years ago with an AP map on his car, but didn't get the AP with it. He has changed some things on the car and needs a retune,
He is convinced he needs to buy a stock ecu, (without a tune/map stored on it) and then get it open source tuned.

I told him I think he should be able to go to an open source tuner, and they can "erase" the AP map stored on his ECU and then re tune with open source. correct? no need to buy a new ecu.

He should be able to pick up a used AP (V2) fairly inexpensive. (Verify that it is unmarried first). This thread indicates that he can marry another AP to the car:

Just contact COBB to confirm.

but if he wanted to go open source, he could have the tuner clear out the AP tune to whatever the new one is correct? without getting an AP, or new ecu....

I don't think romraider will overwrite the AP map see:
http://www.romraider.com/forum/viewt...t=6635&start=0

He will either need to send ecu to COBB or find an unmarried AP, marry it to his car which will overwrite the map , then unmarry the AP and it will put a stock map (not the original) back on there. THEN it should be accessible to tune OS.

See page 12 here: http://www.cobbtuning.com/v/vspfiles...UserManual.pdf
