Default Prop drive shaft stuck in back of transmission.

As the title states...have my trans dropped to replace all the shaft seals (L+R front axles, output prop shaft, input shaft) on my 99 Impreza wagon with EJ223 mated to 5MT.

Searched and only came up with one topic here on NASIOC with no answers in it. "Drive shaft should just pop right out with ease." What I think I have is a drive shaft from hell.

So I ended up dropping the transmission with the shaft still in thinking I could get more leverage to yank it out with brute force/hammering/etc. Still won't budge.

I went ahead and separated the transmission into its 3 sections (prop shaft still stuck in the rear most section) than split the main bell housing down the middle so I could replace what I had to up there. Now the last seal which is the easiest of them to get at (as it just requires you to "slide the prop shaft out"), is now the most difficult. Funny how that works.

Any ideas?

wonder if the shaft has a keeper pin, like found on early 04 Sti axles. Keeper is a hollow metal tube that's easily tapped out. Rotate the shaft and look closely for this.

try knocking it forward a bit to know the potential rust loose then try to pull it out? Some heat could help if you can avoid nuking your seals

PB Blaster, wait a day, get on it with a slide hammer.

There's nothing holding it in there except rust.

I had a similar issue on mine... I pounded on it with a hammer. Then I used a prybar and pried against the "dust cover".... Once I got it off My driveshaft was all scored and I found this.....
