Thumbs up Turbo Impreza 2.5 RS Test Drive

I want to thank Aaron for letting me test drive his turbocharged Impreza 2.5 RS. I know he was a little nervious about letting me get my hands on his baby, but he did it any way. Thank you very much. I tried to be gentle. After the test drive, I've come to one definate conclusion...

More testing is necessary!

As far as judging actual performance, it is hard for me to say. The test drive was pretty short ( hint, hint, nudge, nudge ). I will say this, even though he was only running 5psi and I was trying to take it easy I nearly bounced it off the rev limiter twice. First and second gear just flew by. In fact, as I was telling Aaron that I'd try to be gentle, I glanced at the tach and saw it was at 6-grand. Shift! shift!... Sorry dude.

I was very impressed with a coule of things. First and formost, the quality of the kit and install. Robert really does a first rate job, OEM quality. He also gives you excellent value for your money. Check out Aaron's write up on the AZScooby site when he does it. (LOL, you're committed to it now Aaron. ) There's some really excellent fabrication work there.

Second, I was amazed at how well mannered it was. I think it's much smoother then the stock RS, which has some pretty big torque bumps in the low-to-mid RPM ranges. This thing was just smooth as glass, pulling strongly all the way to redline. I think it has the perfectly sized turbo (T3/T4 hybrid). It was hard for me to judge turbo lag. I didn't notice any in the lower gears (I just wasn't in them long enough). I tried to test it in 5th, but I couldn't really do that because of that darn speed limit on the freeway. Yep, I definately need more testing.

Have I been convinced to get a turbo instead of a supercharger. ... I don't know. I'm definately much closer. It's awfully hard to convince myself to undertake the challenge of getting an SC running when there's such a good turbo kit available with just a short drive to Prescott.

Great car, thanks again for letting me drive it.

Lightbulb

PS: Aaron,

Here's an idea. Rather then thinking about getting taller gears how about raising the redline. I think the stock gear ratios would be fine if the redline was about 7-grand (like the WRX). You might have to get stiffer valve springs and you'd obviously have to get a new ECU (TEC-II, TEC-II!), but I think you'd miss the incredible launch that the stock gear ratios give you (and you're not likely to take the car over 140 MPH any way).

Just a thought,

I'm jealous. I was too busy waiting in line to make a pass to get to even see it.
I hope that you show up at the auto-x next week so I can see it.

I got to drive Aaron's RS-T on Wednesday night @ SpeedWorld vs. him in my RS. It was kind of fun.

I'm sorry I wasn't down there last night, I didn't know Aaron was going. He tried me on my cell but that stupid piece of Nextel crap isn't working very well.... God I hate them....

Have a Nice Day?

Trouble with your calling plan, Kevin?

Oh, by the way. I expect Aaron to accept full responsibility if I am at Mile High within a month getting my car turbocharged.

Wink

You know the turbo is calling your name Bud. How did your car feel after driving mine?

We need more RS-Ts roaming the streets here. Help establish the Subaru performance name before the WRX comes here. We also don't want the WRX drivers to think of the RS as their kid brother or something.

Go for it Bud, you won't be disappointed. If you come up Wednesday night, it looks like Aaron and I will be running the 2 turbo's. RS-T vs SVX-T. That should be fun.

You need a turbo ever since I rode in the RS-T with 5 psi of boost I've been thinking about selling my 88 RX and using the money too build a killer SVX. That would make that white SVX w/out wheels think it's running no boost. while the white SVX w/wheels would pass him like he is going backwards
