Default Dyno&Timeslips - VF48/Any north american Subaru stock turbo record, first in the 10s!

Event: 1/4 Mile Drag Racing (test and tune)
Location: Toronto Motorsports Park, Cayuga, Ontario (NHRA)
Ambient Temp: 61F
Elevation: 630
Weather: Cloudy, cool
Track and Conditions: zero track prep after rain (street wars / street tire night)
Tires: Hoosier DOT legal

Car: 1995 Subaru Impreza
Tuner: Mike @ Innovative Tuning
Builder: Innovative Tuning
Dyno Info: Mustang Dyno
Transmission: Stock 6 Speed
Gear: 4th
Peak HP: 403 whp
Peak Torque: 570 wtq
Baseline hp/tq for a stock 08+ STI on same dyno: 240whp
Target Boost: 28 tapering to 15
Target AFR: varies with boost
Fuel: pump E85

We have lots of Mitsu customers and I love Evos, but in the spring I decided I was tired of hearing that Evos can run a 9 second pass on a stock shortblock and Subarus can't....so I broke that record with my road course Subaru.

Then Wednesday the VF48 (stock STI turbo) record was knocked down to 11.3 and I decided before someone else took away the right to say Evos can run 10s on stock turbo and Subarus can't, I had one of my techs slap a VF48 on my 95 Impreza Thursday. On the dyno it made the same HP I made with my old rally car and a VF39, but with a lot more torque (570 ft lbs)! I didn't spend much time on the tune, but I can probably get HP to hold better at high RPM if I try. The "charge pipe" I rigged to make this work is also pretty comical and I put nothing on the compressor inlet so it was sucking hot air off the top of the engine. There's definitely room for improvement. I'll let others find the limit.

As mentioned there was no track prep after the rain so the track wasn't as good as it usually is, but I got the job done with a 10.97 followed by a 10.96.

This is the first VF48 (or any stock Subaru turbo from a North American car) in the tens and the quickest ever. To be clear this turbo is off a stage 2 car and it has not been ported or otherwise molested to enhance its performance.

This may also be the fastest trap speed for one of these turbos, but I'm not sure. Here's my warmup pass timeslip. The launch stunk, but 100 mph at the 1/8 and 123.9 mph at the 1/4.

This video is the second 10 second pass, the 10.96 at 123 MPH. On this one I must have magically found a spot with grip because it seems it would have held more power on the launch.

Congrats mike!

You didn't have to raise the bar so fast though lol. My hangover wasn't even over!

I believe this record we are all chasing is the "no nos" record as there have been vf's in the 10's on nos for a while.

Weight of the car? That's insane and so is the torque! Congrats on the first ever 10sec pass on the stock vf turbo!

This is getting very interesting. 10's on stock location turbo is insane and all that torque is crazy too.

Man I should have went up to Toronto last night lol. Congrats on the passes, I love watching this car rip up the road courses, it's awesome that it does so well at the strip to.

With so much torque coming on so quick outside of a drag race setting is it jumpy and hard to drive at all?

If this was open to any stock location turbo I would be in the 9s. There are some big ones.

I did this with the white car actually. My road course car is apart for off season changes at the moment.

Oh i see, i just looking and saw 95 impreza and assumed your road car. This was the white gc8 that won the cscs drag series this year just with a vf?

Yup. We put the car together and tuned it Thursday after seeing someone call BS in the other thread where the CT guys made 460. I was sitting here thinking wait til they get a load of me.

Nope we just slapped a stock turbo on Thursday to do this. The car normally runs a rotated turbo kit with a bigger turbo at less boost for CSCS.

This is the car for those who haven't seen it. It normally runs a street car class so it has interior, passenger seat etc. We didn't take anything out for this and I left the parachute assembly on. It's about 2575-2600 lbs + my weight so lighter than some, but a lot heavier than others that don't compete for championships in street class.

Oops yea i didn't word that right, i meant to say as in this is the same setup you guys ran in cscs but the only change was you went to a little vf turbo for the record run.

Rotated vf or went back to stock location? I've check this car out in the pits quite a.few times as well and was always impressed by it.

I'd really love to know what it takes to make that kind of torque curve!! 300 ft-lb @ 2700 rpm would be a blast.

What engine mods? 2.5l? Pistons? bearings? heads? cams? etc.

Would welding the WG shut still be considered a stock turbo record? Seems like there isn't really much need for one on a tune like this.

We bolted on the stock STI turbo, a stock fitment/downpipe/uppipe, wastegate block off bracket, clocked the compressor housing to fit our charge pipe setup, rigged up a hot side charge pipe and oil feed line and I retuned the car. I think that's all we changed. It took less than a full work day. Rotated VF would be neat, but I just wanted to bolt the turbo on and go.

Yup it's a built engine. The high compression and cam/headwork combo makes it spool like that. With the 6262 turbo on it spools really soon too.

It's common practice to weld it or use a bracket to hold it shut and run an external wastegate. We stuck a bracket on.

Absolutely mad.
I never imagined VF cars moving out like these. That powerband looks insane. Please tell me you got a video of this pass.

Great run(s)! Congrats!

Maybe I missed it, but what is the weight on this car? And what is the motor setup?

Over 360WHP from 3,400 to 6,400rpm's is quite a powerband for a stock STI turbo!

Said 2575-2600 w/o driver.
Also interested in the engine setup.
