That said; if whoever is posting lacks the ability to search or are a clear cut doucher, they will get flamed. Nobodies fault but their own. I've only seen a few instances where people get flamed when they probably didn't really deserve it.

I try fairly hard to judge a person by the content of their post rather than their member number. Many of the OG's are some of the worst....turning just about any thread into an OT exercise....kind of like this one.

Look at the growth of social media in the last few years, it should be no surprise that it's changing the way people spend their time on the interwebs. So while I don't do facebook, I'm sure your observation is accurate, and frankly not surprising.

My original screen name was smileycvc. I joined back in 2007. for some reason I can't recover the password for that account so I had to make this one. I tried to get help from some mods, but no luck.

I blame the Millenial generation. Everything has to be "now" they can't be told "no" and they throw a massive hissy fit when things don't go their way

That's because of their baby boomer parents, it's easier to give them what they want and go into debt for it instead of raising them to be self reliant and responsible for their own actions.

My kids don't fall under your generalization of the millenial generation.

I think it's easy to blame the younger generation as this forum is made up of a disproportionate amount of young people. Look at the cars Subaru produces and the price range they fall in and you will understand why. That being said, there are plenty of ignorant non-millenial generation folk on here. It's the internet, it's full of idiots.

NASIOC/i-Club has been around longer than fb.

The fb page/group that I'm part of has been more about selling parts.

Maybe I'm old and don't know how to use fb.

As a new member I came to NASIOC for the tech and mechanical advice of people with the passion for Subaru's. Like any online form, you take the good with the bad a filter through the BS. The advice and information I've read and received so far on this site has been helpful.

With that said... I am pretty disappointed that I cannot post images on this site as easily as on Facebook. I often don't have the time to load images to a separate site, and then copy the URL, start a new thread, blah, blah, blah. A lot of times I want to share a cool image with other Subie fans and I end up only posting it on a FB page. That's the beauty of FB, the simplicity. Take a picture from my phone and "boom," it's uploaded.

I recommend that if you want to be competitive with social media sites, in regards to gaining new members, then adopting this type of image sharing ability is a good example of where to start.

Does anybody have any thoughts on the subject?

I agree to some extent. I use to belong to several mountain bike forums such as RideMonkey and PinkBike, but I finally got tired of all the elitist BS form people spouting off. Turns out, a lot of those self proclaimed experts were nobodies that didn't have any kind of credentials to their name. So I quit going to those forums.

Although I haven't experienced that type of attitude towards my posts on this site yet, I have seen that same elitist nonsense posted here and there. Even on this very thread. I came to this site to seek out help and information from fellow Subaru owners, not to ridiculed and put down.

To me, instead of giving some stranger online a hard time, you should be out driving and enjoying your car. I mean, that's essentially what we're here for right?

I think a lot of new people are driven away from posting something stupid and having the trolls rip them apart. I understand both sides of it though, you can only help new people and answer the same question so many times before you get tired of it, and a lot of new folks seem to be too lazy and unmotivated to help themselves first before reaching out.

as with any car community that has been around for a long time, there's a huge age / generation gap. this doesn't have to be a problem, but people seem pretty close minded towards one another. it's unfortunate. I've seen other car communities handle it a lot better / are much more tight knit and welcoming.

A couple observations from being on various forums for the past 13 years..

Post count and joint date are what simple minded people consider the extent of how much you can possibly know about anything on the board.

Old members generally don't care for greenhorns. Half the time it's due to the noobs being idiots. The other half is veterans standing on their soapbox, being idiots.

If you feel the need to scream "SEARCH" in every thread that may have been covered before, YOU'RE the one with the problem. Quit beating the dead horse and either take the 2 minutes to answer the question, or move along.

If you're a new guy, with either none or some experience, just sit back and absorb as much info as possible. Remember, this may not be real life, but since most people consider it to be, just be yourself. Similar to face to face socialization, you'll either be liked or not.

Members that go into threads purely for entertainment purposes and try to derail it are usually the ones that end up looking like a jackass. But wait, your forum buddies are on their way to help go off topic even further? Well, then your cunning, quick witted comments are now cool and made everyone laugh! Congrats, you've confirmed just how lame you really are.

We can sit here and blame the younger generation for everything that is wrong with any "car community", but where does that get us? Why are YOU here? Why have YOU stayed for the past decade if things are so bad? What are you doing to help THIS community become better? Or are you just too old and disgruntled to care any longer?

But this is only my second post in 5 years, what do I know? Here's how I described a similar scenario on another forum.

Quote:
If people would spend as much time actually driving and enjoying their cars and eachother as much as they do bitching about the next hot parts and how much internet cred they've built up, this community would be much different. Instead, most are only concerned with popularity, online acceptance, and "one upping" the next person before the next show or meet. Do yourself a favor and get off the internet for a while.

well, this escalated quickly. let's all whip out our member numbers and compare them!

show up to meets. don't be a douchebag. don't act like you know everything. don't drive like an asshat in the parking lot. be friendly. take an interest in what the other guys do, not just what they drive and how it compares to what you drive. don't be a douchebag to the mods (except for lippert). don't take the internets seriously. thicken up your skin. find the biggest guy at a meet and beat his ass. oh wait, disregard that last one.
