It's under the passenger seat in the '02 Models. I assume it's that way in the '01s too.

Actually its under the driver side seat.
Its a 5" or 6" sub with 80 watts. Its pretty nice if tuned right.

Wow, the subwoofer is tunable? Or you mean just through the radio's treble and bass settings? PM me somebody, because I have trouble keeping up with so many messages. Thanks.

You can get the trunk light kit from Lisa (a vendor here) or maybe your local dealer??

IIRC, the kit is somewhere $30-40.

the previous models had like a gain dial on the side of the unit but it required removal of the box. Im sure it could complement the stock system if tuned correctly.

yea, I blew my sub too. I'm taking it back to Subaru for a warrenty replacement monday.

it's under the drivers seat, and on the side there is a gain knob, and a high cut adjustment. The speaker is prolly only 4.5" - 5" in diameter.

oh yea, you need a 14mm socket to get it out. It's also stuck to the carpet with sticky tape. I have mine sitting next to me.

The stock subwoofers are a joke. Don't buy one! The subwoofer wasn't designed to handle the power that its amplifier feeds it. Turning up the volume makes it distort like crazy, even though the rest of the car's speakers sound fine. I'm also disappointed that the stock headunit is very powerful and rather clean, but Subaru's "premium" speakers ($79 extra) still can't handle the power, and in my opinion, sound muddy.

Unless you're buying a new Outback 3.0H6 that comes standard with the 9 speaker McIntosh sound system, order the cheapest possible stock system with your new Subarus. I haven't heard the McIntosh system myself, but I have read several positive reviews on it. The money you save by not getting the stock subwoofer ($200), 6-disc changer ($600), and "upgraded" speakers ($79) will be enough to buy one serious aftermarket component system.

I don't agree. My WRX sport wagon has the sub under the passenger seat. And it sounds great. No distortion and I have had a bunch of comments from friends on how good the stock stero sounds...I had to diddle the head unit controls and I am not a "thumper" but I am pleased that I won't have to buy an after market stero.(I also have the speaker up grade.)

A good head unit, amp, and speakers will cost less, be much cleaner sounding and is easily expandable in the future if you ever decide to upgrade more. I agree with BJamerican in that I would order the lowest level of stereo ***** and get good aftermarket components. They will definitely sound better and last much longer. Just my thoughts.

I just got my WRX and it has the upgraded speakers and amp/sub package. The stereo is sufficiently loud at very low volumes but sounds really good. My only problem is the sub seems to get too loud too easily and distorts.

What kind of adjustments should one make to the gain and the high cut to turn it down a bit?
