Default Phoenix Area - Need Apt w/Garage

Moving to Phoenix soon and need suggestions for a good area to live. Never lived there so I have no idea what is a good neighborhood and what isnt. Want a nice apt complex with fitness, pool, and garage space. Im 40 so I dont want a college party place and dont want to live in the hood.

Must have 1 or 2 car garage for all my tools and STi. Doesn't have to be attached.

I can do 1k a month but prefer to be around 800.

Yes I can look when I finally get there but my moving company will be a week behind me and they need an address before starting transport.

I dont have a job yet so anywhere in the area works. I looked on all the apt finder sites and they all suck.

Putting this out there because I know a lot of places on the East Coast give crazy cash back or free rent for referrals, guessing that is same out there?? If you help me out, i'll say you referred me.

thanks in advance

When you say Phoenix area do you mean the city of Phoenix or the greater Phoenix area that includes Mesa/Tempe/Chandler/Peoria?

when you say Phoenix I assume you mean the greater phoenix area because no one moves to the city of Phoenix.

TLDR - narrow your search down to a smaller location

Anywhere, really doesn't matter. Looking to get work downtown but who knows, I may work in Tuscon.

Called 9920 and it looks pretty nice. Availability is not good though. May have to wait a few weeks until Feb 1 but Ill keep checking. Love the 2 car garage attached.

Any other options...

I believe some of the PBBell properties have garages. I have an apt in Crestone with a non-attached garage. It's only an extra $60 a month (single).

Bala Desertscape has garages that are connected to the apartment. It's like a house. They are a little pricey though.

edit: They are now renamed to "Villas on Hampton Avenue"

edit edit: I'm actually thinking about applying to move back there if they'll accept me. Caused a bit of a ruckus working on the cars late at night and left the garage pretty messy so we'll see. I suggest you don't mention cars during your sit-down session.

I liked the Sonoran Apartments in Ahwatukee (Phoenix by the address) when we lived there five years ago. They have detached garages, but don't know the rates. I think our two bedroom was $1065. Gated, relatively safe, mostly quiet, very conveniently located to a whole bunch of stuff (which we appreciated when we first moved there).
One word of advice - don't get an apt near the pools. Too noisy in the summer (kids and pool parties).

ETA - Here's the link. http://www.sonoranapts.com/ Do you know who you'll be working for? Some employers offer discounts at Equity Residential properties, like no deposit or application fee or whatever. Looks like 1 BRs are $870+, 2 BRs are $930+, and 3 BRs are $1100+. Don't know how the garages work, though.

I would avoid anything within about 10 miles of Tempe. It's a great town but all of the apartments are full of college kids.

The biltmore area. Google Biltmore, phoenix, az.
There is some new ones just going up on 26th st camelback, great restaurants too.

If you work in Tucson, i would stay in Southeast Phoenix area. Ahwatukee/Chandler is nice area, not familiar enough to recommend anything there.

nice, welcome

i grew up in ocean city nj, moved here 25 years ago
east valley for sure
i live in ahwatukee, less than a block from the Sonoran apartments linked previously
great location, those apartments do have banks of detached garages, you'd likely be able to wrench at night if you do it with an ounce or two of concern for your neighbors

one huge plus for a lot of subie drivers i know, about that location ....
E85 is caddy corner at the Valero, can't get much more convenient than that

from one south jersey dude to another

Found what you're referring to (Broadstone Camelback) and a 1 bed starts at 1350. Cant afford that out there. I'm paying 1700 for a 2bed in NJ with a 2 car attached garage but the cost of living is way higher out here and I make a lot of $ right now. 1350 out there would be the equivalent of 2000 here. thanks for the suggestion though the apartments do look nice

Wife is now insisting on a 2bed. I can swing 930/month and it looks like its pretty close to downtown too. Hows traffic going into the city from there around 8am and returning around 5? I dont see anything about garages though and google maps doesnt show garages. Just called but no one answered. Think its 0430 out there. Ill call later

I dont know what you consider close to downtown, but those sonoran not really close to downtown. Yet it may-be 15 minutes away, but here thats common, just on the highway and you're there. But this area/zip code could be perfect if you do plan out working in Tucson, easy out easy in.

Traffic? It can be heavy, wont lie. Use this, around our time to see live traffic...
http://www.azfamily.com/traffic/maps/
http://www.ktar.com/11/1490679/Traffic-Center

Again i only say this because you may go into Tucson, stay away from Peoria, N phoenix, anything North.

I got a wife friend who lives basically in the area thes sonoran apts are, and they pay 1200$ for a 4 bedroom house, with garage. He's a doctor travels out to Casa Grande for his work. They're renters.

There tends to be really nice apts, with garages, but no one ends up renting them out, so they turn into storage for the complex. I am unsure of the additional cost to get a garage.
Or garage is one big garage where you see the next car open to yours. no privacy. Then you got underground parking.

I checked the traffic just now, thanks for the link. 2 hrs time difference and traffic is not bad at all. Thought it would be worse.

I hear you about just renting a house but the wife wants a pool and fitness area. I'll be damned if I have to maintain a pool in a rental house.

Just called Clarendon and confirmed it wouldnt work. Seems like a good location close to hospitals. Im looking for a hospital administrator job so that area close to all the hospitals looks great.

I know Ocean City well. Lived in Pomona (AC Airport) for years and now im leaving from Cape May. Been in NJ for 12 years off and on, time to leave for good.

Yes I do all my own wrenching, sometimes at night so storage for tools is essential. Plan on converting to E85 when I get there since its very prevalent. 1 station in all of NJ and its 2hrs away. Ahwatukee area is def on my list.

Then i would stay in the 85016,85014 areas for hospitals. Course theres hospitals all over town, but those zips where they're close. And even if you have to travel west, or east, you be going against traffic, so wouldn't be getting stuck anywhere.

Just called sonoran and they dont have garages. She told me about sedona ridge which is down the street. Called and the garage is 75/m but she doesn't think there is electricity in them. WTF .. Also she told me there is a 2% renters tax and every rental property in the state has it. I thought NJ nickel and dimed me to death but wow this is new.

But remember here in AZ unlike most places we have move-in specials. Which fall off when you go to renew, but it tends to be fairly cheap to move into a place.

Thats a good point, we plan on 1 year and not renewing. Just enough time to land a decent job and build or buy a new condo or home. I don't want to tap into savings so move-in specials may be the answer.

if you work in phoenix i really recommend checking out some places in mesa like the one i posted. traffic is less hectic than the westside and you're not driving into the sun on the way to work/home.

Huh. I coulda sworn they used to have garages. That whole area is pretty decent, and close to freeways, so Sedona Ridge should be okay? Don't trust the human on the phone to have a clue about garages, regarding electricity. If you have time, go view the property?

For hospitals, somewhere around the 101/60 may be good. That's within 5-10 miles of Banner Desert on Dobson and Southern (I think), and Chandler Regional at Dobson and Chandler (ish). That's where I am, and a few others of us are. It's about 10 minutes from Ahwatukee. It's very centrally located, convenient to freeways, etc. I definitely do not know about apartments in the area, though. Houses out here are great, though. Decently sized, not horribly expensive, usually a pool, and no freaking HOAs. Most were built in the 70s... we have a 1400 sqft 3 bedroom.

House rentals _may_ include pool maintenance? Really don't know, but it's worth checking out. My pool guy is $90/month and he does everything. We're slackers that shun the sun.

Also, in the short term, if you can plan your wrenching, just get a storage unit? Use it as a convenient excuse to bring beverages to a new friend's place?
