Default Soft windshield?

I was driving home yesterday on the 101 which is notorious for flying objects (ladders, sofas, mattresses, buckets, paint, etc.). The windshield was struck my a small stone. Small enough that you could not see it coming, and when it hit it was barely a noise. I could see a spot right in front of my face when it hit. In other cars I have owned, it would have just left a little pit in the windshield. This time it was weird, just left a small star with little cracks coming off of it. When I got home I pressed on it and it spiderwebbed. I did not want them trying to repair it, as I have never seen a windshield that looked good after repair. And this spot was right in front of the drivers face. Getting it replaced tuesday.

Any one else had a similar experience where their windshield cracked when you really would not expect it to?

Newer windshields, not just Subaru, simply are not as durable as the older ones. I had similar problems with my 2008 OBS and 2010 OB - small stone hit and a repair needed. I also noted that the newer windshields are more susceptible to pitting. Check with your Auto Insurance company as they may pay for most of the replacement.

My insurance pays 100% for glass.

I just got a call from the glass company. They only place they can get the replacement glass from is the dealer. They have to get approval from the insurance company first, and then order the glass. Looks like this may take a while.

Should not take more than a day or so. There simply is no other replacement options other than the dealer/SOA at the moment. Give them three days, after which you can raise "H...".

Had the exact same thing happen. I had it repaired. But it re-cracked. It's contained because the repair is holding it, but it's right in front of my face too. My repair has a lifetime warranty so I will be getting the windshield replaced too.

Insurance approved it. Glass company said should have it first part of next week. Once they inspect it they will schedule the replacement. Probably thursday. I told the shop not to send any new guys that need practice. I warned them that I am particular, have had problems in the past with broken rain sensing units, trim, air leaks, etc. and they better send someone good.

it is within the windshield, so any replacement windshield would have to have a new heating element within it also.

Yes. It's right on the base of the windshield. If you need it replaced it's not a problem just have to let them know when ordering replacement.

What insurance company do you have? I had this happen to me before & progressive doesn't have that coverage so I had to pay out of pocket.

If anything the windshield would be too hard, soft things don't tend to crack

I have full glass coverage with no deductible through GEICO. You can select full glass no deductible (slightly higher premium), full glass with a $500 deductible or no glass coverage. It's an option you have to select but I can't imagine Progressive doesn't offer it at all.

I have Progressive with a $0 glass deductible on my policy. You should be able to select that in your policy.

Mine was 495 for the glass, 126 for installation.

yeah, the glass is somewhere around $500.00. Plus labor. Plus any other "trim" that has to be replaced.

I had a spot repair done by Safelite in April that's not holding. It's re-cracked, not outside the margins of the repair, but there is a crack that catches my windshield wiper & has left a gouge in the wiper. So I called today to take advantage of their lifetime warranty on their repair. Since I have full glass coverage with no deductible on my insurance, the replacement is at no cost to me. They explained most insurance companies will not replace with OEM if OEE (Original Equipment Equivalent, identical specs just not manufactured by Subaru) is available.

Local Safelite office called back later today, & it is in stock at a local Subaru dealership & Safelite should have it in their hands Thursday & will call to set up an appointment then. I asked about a national back order & they have no knowledge of it. Also said, since it's coming from the dealer it is likely OEM. (mine does have the windshield wiper de-icer too)

4 days doesn't seem bad to me. Anyone still waiting or do you have yours now?

Finally got mine replaced yesterday. 6 weeks to get the damn thing. I do know that they got 135 windshields in last week in New Jersey, and many of them were spoken for. 60 of the pending orders were VOR (vehicle off road). Those get priority. My dealership ordered mine VOR and it still took 45 days.

If your dealership has one, great. If they don't, then good luck. The dealership told the glass company it would only be a couple days. But Subaru kept pushing back the date every time we had a new date. Many in stock days came and went. I was basically told by SOA that if the dealership doesn't order it VOR good luck ever getting one. I was told that they were not anticipating such demand based on their historical data and that the persons in charge of parts at SOA was working on the issue as there were alot of people waiting. Some not so patiently. I hope this is not the case every time I need parts. Very frustrating.

I hope so too. In NY we go through a different distributor than SOA. We go through SDC & supposedly a local dealership has one in stock. We shall see.

No call Thursday... called this afternoon. OEM, all weather package windshield in their possession, scheduled a Monday install. Thankfully I only had to wait 1 week.

Windshield installed today. OEM Subaru glass. 1 week after my claim was made, installed. Not bad.

My glass company said that they will not have the windshield until 3 or 4 more weeks. They said that there are none in the US right now. Meanwhile, the crack continues to grow..

Maybe my claim was timed right after a recent shipment. But thankfully I didn't have to wait that long. I had a spot repair done initially that held for a few weeks, but the crack even though it re-cracked did not grow past the margins of the spot repair (after 4 months it stayed that same size). I only opted for replacement because the crack was starting to damage my wiper blades. If it's going to take that long can't they do a temporary spot treatment to stop it from spreading?

Not sure about a temporary spot treatment since the crack is so long. I was on the highway when I heard the strike. Sounded like a gun shot. I looked around and saw nothing. A couple miles later I noticed the crack. Over time I noticed the crack was expanding. Someone told me it's called "walking".
