Default Is my fuel pump going bad? Or is it worse?

I think my fuel pump may be going bad. At least I hope that's all it is. My car is completey stock with 19,500 on it and a couple hundred miles ago, it developed this weird noise. It's a extremely high pitched whine that sounds like it's comming from the rear of the car. It only happens when the car is at wide open throttle and at engine speeds of about 4,000 RPMs and higer. It will happen sometimes at lower engine speeds too, like 3000 if the car is under heavy load and WOT (like if i was going 15 in 3rd gear and floored it for example). But the noise is at those higher engine speed ONLY under WOT. So when I hit say 6K and push in the clutch and release the gas, the whine goes away until I release the clutch and hit the gas again.

Well, tonight things got interesting to say the least. I was driving around and noticed that my car seemed to be struggling. Like if I were in 3rd at like 2,000 RPM and pressed slightly on the gas, the car would jerk back and forth for a second or two, and then take off, then maybe jerk a little more, and be fine. I also noticed a couple weeks ago (thought it was just my imagination) that a steady slow acceleration from say 3,500 up to 4,500 in 3rd or 4th gear (that's the gears i noticed it in), the car seemed to plateau out for split second, and then lurch forward again (it's not really a lurch, barely noticable, but you can tell it struggled).

So tonight I pull into a parking lot and I'm driving real slow in 2nd gear at about 2,300 RPM. As soon as I'd give it a slight amount of gas, jerks and stuggles then goes. If I floor it insetad, it will pause for a second, then go fine. Also, taking off in first, and especially reverse, the RPMs drop REALLY bad as soon as the clutch ingages, and almost stalls then lurches forward, then almost stalls, then goes.

Possibly the biggest symptom, is when I parked, the car was idling terribly. The RPMs were bouncing evenly between 700 and 800. And the idle sound is definetely wrong (sputter, spit, etc.). The car isn't idling steadily, and the lights even dim, then get bright, then dim, then get bright.

Now, I also noticed (but it might be my imagination again) that it sounds like the fuel pump is abnormally loud. You know when you turn the car to the run position, but don't start it, the fuel pump kinda engages and whirrs for a second. Well it sounds really loud and whiney now. So all in all, when I driving the car, it sometimes feels like i'm running out of gas (if you ever ran a car out of gas, you know what i'm talking about). How the engine sputters and struggles, and coughs. Well why is that happening!?!?!?!?!?

Also, after I was done driving, there was a horrible, very strong smell of rotten eggs (sulfur smell). This smell started around the same time as the whine, but it was REALLY bad tonight. I've had a few people suggest that the smell was because of a bad/clogged cat. A bad cat on a car under 20K miles?

I'm gonna call the dealer tomorrow and schedule an appt.
I'd appreciate any input from anyone.

Your description of the problem but minus the squeel sounds like the fuel pump.

For the squeel I had the EXACT problem on one of my own cars. You know what it was? A pin hole in one of the welds in the exhaust! It was just the right size to make a high pitched noise at the right rpm and engine load.

Well, now that you mention it, I did remove my cat-back, to get it out of the way when I was cleaning the underbody. Could an exhaust gasket be bad? Do I need to use some gasket sealant?

could quite possible be a clogged fuel filter with a bad tank of gas and clogged pump filter sock. the clogged filter may be causing the pump to get overloaded too

I vote for the fuel filter.
