Default 96 Impreza 2.2l false rev limiter

Hello Subaru world.. just recently got back to NASIOC, hoping it is as eventful and entertaining as when I left it...

I'm getting what seems to be a false rev limiter at roughly 4k rpms, half to full throttle, 2nd and 3rd gear. Pulls fine to 4k then skips twice like I'm hitting limiter.. light to moderate throttle is fine all the way to the actual 6k limiter. Plugs and wires replaced about 5 weeks ago. Rechecked those connections and everything seems fine. Please and thanks in advance.

96 Impreza Wgn 2.2 n/a
K&N intake and filter
2.5" Borla cat-back w/ high flow cat
Sprint 1.75" Drop w/ Kyb GR2's

Rebuilt rear quarters, I did say it's a 96..

Sounds like some sort of VSS issue. If the ECU isn't seeing a signal from the speedometer (There's a unit in there that converts the cable rotations from the tranny, into a speed signal), it will cut out at 4k

I've had this happen as well. Turned out that a new front O2 sensor solved it for me, after plugs wires and tested good coilpack.

Good luck,
Jay

Thanks for the tips guys.. going to try o2 sensor soon because that's the only code I have.. gone through plenty of o2's without them causing this problem so that's why i didn't jump right on switching it out. I'll start there and see what happens. It isn't a constant problem so unfortunately my slackerness takes over and says "see, it isn't happening anymore so don't worry about it"

Thanks again

**Update**

Turns out my car doesn't have a VSS but rather just the speedo cable that basically runs into the same location on the tranny, even though it throws a VSS code.. In my search of this I found a bad ground from the tranny to the firewall, repaired that while having to move the speedo cable around a little bit, code cleared and false rev limiter went with it.. been clear for 2 weeks..

Thanks again for the tips guys.
