2014 without the Viper

http://www.motorauthority.com/news/1...urs-of-le-mans

Quote:
After making its return to the 24 Hours Of Le Mans last year, the Viper GTS-R race car won’t be among the lineup at this year’s race. The information was revealed by SRT boss Ralph Gilles, though he is yet to give a reason for the decision.

“We regretfully and respectfully decline to participate in this year’s 24 Hours of Le Mans,” Gilles told Autoweek. “We are honored to once again be invited by the [race organizer, the Automobile Club de l’Ouest] to compete in this historic event, and they were the first to be informed of our decision. We will remain focused on our North American racing program in 2014.”

A possible issue is the cost of competing in the TUDOR United SportsCar Championship, which has more races than the standalone American Le Mans Series. SRT is thought to be focusing on American events in order to lure potential buyers and turn around flagging sales. It’s also thought that SRT is focusing on its privateer Viper GT3-R race car designed for the United SportsCar Championship’s GT-Daytona class.

For three consecutive years, from 1998 through 2000, Vipers took both first and second place in the GTS class at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Last year, SRT entered two examples of the latest Viper in the equivalent GTE Pro class and managed to come a respectable 24th overall. Porsche won the class, with one of its 911 RSRs coming 15th overall.

The ACO will reveal in the coming weeks the two cars that will replace the Vipers in this year’s 24 Hours of Le Mans, which takes place in June. The good news is that ACO officials are said to be confident SRT will be back in 2015’s race.

This Is Toyota's 1,000 Horsepower AWD Hybrid Le Mans Weapon

Most of the hype over this year's 24 Hours of Le Mans and World Endurance Championship has been Porsche's return to the sport and their looming battle with corporate cousins Audi. But they're not the only ones who will be vying for the title! Meet Toyota's latest hybrid contender.

This is the Toyota TS040 Hybrid, the sequel to last year's TS030 Hybrid. Unveiled earlier today at the Paul Ricard circuit in the South of France, Toyota says it represents the most advanced hybrid technology in modern racing, which is a hell of a claim to make considering the fierce competition it will face.

The biggest change is that the car is now all-wheel drive. The new car packs a 3.7-liter gasoline V8 engine supplemented for the first time ever with an Aisin generator up front and a Denso unit in the rear. That's 513 horsepower from the V8 and 473 horsepower from the electric systems. Together, the powerplants put the car close to 1,000 horsepower.

Power isn't the only reason the hybrid system is more prominent this year, Toyota says. The teams are now required to use 25 percent less fuel than in 2013, which has resulted in various powertrain and aerodynamic changes.

The car keeps its red, white and blue livery from last year, but I think it looks even sexier this time around. It's a visually striking race car for sure.

Toyota says they have reshuffled their driver lineup for 2014 with Alex Wurz, Stéphane Sarrazin and Kazuki Nakajima in one car (but not at the same time, obviously) and Anthony Davidson, Nicolas Lapierre and Sébastien Buemi in the other (again, one at a time.)

The FIA World Endurance Championship opens in April and Le Mans is in June. We'll see if Toyota's car has what it takes to duke it out with longtime favorite Audi and exciting newcomer Porsche.

Wow, 4, 6 and 8 cylinders for the LMP1 cars! Take note, F1.

All hybrids then you will have the non hybrid Rebellion R-one Toyota V8 and whatever Lotus is going to run, if they show up. Plus the Nissan Zeod car as a precursor for their LMP1 car next year.

This is what happens with a set of rules the opens up innovation and not strangle it.

oh, they strangle it, believe me. There seems to be a rigid fuel consumption plan, and if I´m not mistaken, the car has to be in a fuel window between plus 2 and minus 2 percent.

Yes but all the ACO did was set a fuel flow rate based on the size of the hybrid system teams wanted to use (2, 4, 6, or8 mega joules) and the team have to come up with what they think is the best system for reaching that target fuel consumption. It should say something about the fact that no 2 teams came up with the same engine design or share a similar hybrid system.

I'm so pumped for this race the showdown between to German giants owned by the same company. I really hope Porsche doesn't take Audis long standing title.(I'm a fanboy)

Anyone planning on attending this year?
Weather sucked donkeyballs last year. Memories are kinda scaring me off this year even though I'll be in France that week for work.

Le Mans LMP could be pretty epic with Toyota / Audi / Porsche truly battling it out!

Audi had a rough start. This weekend is Spa where I believe Audi is fielding a 3rd car. Toyota looked strong. Porsche looks like they will be good. This weekend may shed a bit more light onto how the 3 stack up.

I'll be going.
Is it worth it going to any of the stuff during the week before the race?
I'm staying in Paris so every trip would be ~$150 I guess?
