Question where to put TEC3 ECU in MY00 2.5RS

So far, I haven't found a particularly good place within my MY00 2.5RS to locate the TEC 3 ECU unit.

One I-Clubber suggested using the bottom-most radio slot. That won't work for me since there's already something there.

For the WRX, Vishnu suggests mounting the TEC3 ECU under the same kickplate that covers the stock ECU. There isn't enough room to do that on the RS.

How about lengthening the wiring harness and mounting the ECU to the side of the battery box located in the trunk?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Chris

I mounted mine on top of the stock ecu under the ecu kickplate.

Buy some bolts that are 2" longer than stock and make some 1 7/8" spacers to raise the kick panel up enough to fit the TEC3 ecu.

Austin -

That sounds like a reasonable solution. Thanks for the help.

You could always do a mount under the seat, not a bad place.

Mine is located in the passenger dash. It is behind the glovebox. It requires cutting a few plastic studs and whatnot that don't serve any purpose but at least that way it breathes a little better for cooling.

Come up with any final solutions on this yet?

Angry Aaaarrrrgggggghhhhhhh!!

This is driving me absolutely nuts!

There's no place on the driver's side under dash area that looks like there's available space and I've taken the passenger side dash pretty much apart. No place there either.

So looks like my choices are under one of the front seats, under the rear seat, or in the trunk.

What would Kenny say? Probably nothing. They killed Kenny. You bastards!

This position will keep water out of the TEC3 while fording shallow rivers and allows the fan to circulate cool air. It also provides ready access to the port and puts the crank LED in plain sight.

A great solution. However, it doesn't work for me since the factory CD player occupies that slot.

What was wrong with mounting it under the kickplate?

I was concerned about the ECU getting enough ventilation. Everyone keep in mind, his car is a GC, not a GD so it may be a bit different in some places.

Default replace ashtry and cig lighter?

I wonder if there would be room in the space that the ashtray and cigarette lighter currently occupy? Guess i'll take the stereo surround off and have a look.

Help me out guys. Am I correct in thinking that the surround is removed by (gently) prying it off?

Thanks,

Chris

Default re. under kickplate

There's nothing really wrong with mounting it under the kickplate except that it would create a hump on the floor. or is the increased height less noticeable than i am imagining?

Go get a book that's 1 3/4" -ish thick and set it on top of the kickplate under the carpet and see for yourself.

Thumbs up Austin was right

After all this hoorah, I did as Austin suggested and put a manual on the kickplate under the carpet. In fact, my book was 2.25" thick instead of the ~1.75" actually required.

And guess what, it didn't seem particularly noticeable at all!

So if I had just listened to Austin in the first place, most of my dash and interior trim would still be in place instead of sitting in the back seat.

And by leaving some extra space, I don't expect there will be an airflow problem. I'll fashion a tunnel that goes all the way to the top edge of the carpet so that air can get in and move around under the kickplate.

I'll probably attach the TEC3 ECU to the kickplate itself using well nuts.

Thanks for all the help.
