At the Track The OFFICIAL 2014 MAIC Track Day Calendar

mav1c, the MAIC Track Master, has authorized me to start the official track day thread this year. (The last time I tried this it turns out that he had already posted a thread, and I just didn't see it, so this time I made sure to ask first! )

If anyone has some good pics of MAIC Subies on track, send me the link and I'll add a few.

This is what I have so far. I am trying to only include anything within about a 6 hour drive of DC, which is pretty centralized to MAIC.

If you know of and/or want a track day, HPDE, or motorsports event on here, just PM me or post in the thread. Thanks!

- As of the drafting of this post some of the events listed are shown on the club's/organizer's website but aren't shown on the track's website. Contact the organizers directly for the most up-to-date information on events.

Some good scheduling / calendar links:
Due to the post growing too long, I've moved the Track Links down to the next post.

Track Links:
  • Lime Rock Park – Challenging, historic 1.5-mile road course in northwestern CT. Revamped in the past few years, maintaining all of the original configuration, but adding new configuration options for a couple sections.
  • Monticello Motor Club – Exclusive motorsports country club north of New York City. Multiple track configurations up to 4.1 miles long. Very few “outsider” HPDEs are held here.
  • North Carolina Center for Automotive Research (NCCAR) – 2-mile, 11 turn road course in eastern NC, part of a vehicle testing facility.
  • Nelson Ledges – Fast 1.82-mile track in northeastern OH that dates back to the 1960s, but has been upgraded since ~2003.
  • New Jersey Motorsports Park (NJMP) – Modern, two track facility (Lightning & Thunderbolt) that opened in 2008 in southern NJ.
  • Pittsburgh International Race Complex (Pitt Race) – 1.6-mile track in western PA that began life as BeaveRun in 2002. Under new ownership for the past few years, which has apparently resulted in some upgrades to the facility.
  • Pocono Raceway – A 2.5-mile tri-oval in Eastern PA with multiple infield road course configurations using different parts of the oval.
  • Summit Point Motorsports Park – Facility in northeastern WV (just west of DC) with three tracks (Summit Point, Jefferson Circuit and Shenandoah Circuit). Note that the Jefferson Circuit is being significantly expanded and upgraded over the winter.
  • Virginia International Raceway (VIR) – Modern reincarnation of an historic 3.2-mile road course near the VA/NC border. Multiple configurations, all of which is being freshly repaved for 2014.
  • Watkins Glen International – Famous high-speed 3.4-mile road course in NY that has hosted everything from club racing to F1.
  • Thompson Speedway: – 1.7mi 1950s road course being repaved, modernized and planned for re-opening in June 2014

I just learned about the Jefferson expansion today, when WDCR SCCA PDX posted about it on teh Facebook. I guess it's been in the works for a while.

Here's an aerial view of the expansion that is making the rounds of the internet now:

And here's my sweet freehand version rotating the new section and drawing it onto the "old" track map taken from Summit's website:

It's hard to get a feel for it from the aerial shot, but apparently there's some elevation change in that new section.

Hey guys,
Pitt Race is also doing some expansion. The South Track is under construction. The new owners have done a bunch of really nice stuff there. Lots of bathrooms and pavement, etc. Its farther along than this image from Google, but won't be completed until at least next year the last I heard.

I'll post up here when the TT guys come up with some dates. Attendance at last years Club Trial events was pretty low (11 at the August event! ), and if that happens again this year we might not get any events next year. So come on up!

Also, last year Pitt Race started doing "TrackCross" events where you run turns 1-8 like an autocross, but obviously its much faster and there are no work assignments, no classes yada yada. Although it's not a "track day" its a really good way for somebody that's interested in getting on a track to do so without all the other track day stuff. So I'll post those dates/times also, when they become available.

April SCCA Club Trial

August SCCA Club Trial

I shot them an email through their website "Contact Us" page earlier this week asking what the plans were for the South Track, but haven't heard back. Good to hear that construction has started; I was just going by that same Google Maps view you posted, and who knows how old or new that imagery is!

Updated the original post with events for the EMRA Racing events that Josh posted, Kojote Sport up at Watkins Glen, and Schattenbaum PCA at NJMP and Summit Point.

I imagine my list will look pretty similar.
- I may do the first VIR event on the new pavement in March (in which case I would skip the SCCA PDX the following weekend).
- I still have yet to get to NJMP, so I'd like to do that at some point this year.
- I still would like to get back to the Glen (haven't been there since 2001), but haven't really looked at when would be a good time.
- And I'll probably see about doing an event at Thompson Speedway up in CT, and work that in with a visit home - maybe get my brother and/or Dad out there with me.
- Rather than the NASA Summit Point event in November I'll probably try to do 4 days straight at VIR (Audi Club on Full, then Trackdaze on Full & Grand). I tried in 2012, but first the CTS-V died on me, so I lost about a day dragging it home and bringing the Subaru back, and then a short-notice business trip cut off the day on the Grand course so I think I only got 1 session in.

Anybody else notice both EMRA and NASA @ Summit Nov8-9? Who will be on Main or has Summit Point overlooked double-booking it? I know the EMRA guys were discussing going back to Shenandoah circuit because some of the Time Trialers like the twisty.

Let me get this straight. NASA HPDEs aren't timed?

Hmmm, good point. EMRA's site doesn't specify; I just assumed it was the main circuit and didn't notice the NASA event when I added the EMRA event to the list. NASA's site specifically says "main circuit", so EMRA will apparently be on one of the other two courses. (Note that EMRA also doesn't specify which configuration they'll be running at Pocono.)

I was wondering if you know of any open autocross events near PA area?

Does any club time HPDEs? That kind of goes against the point of it being an HPDE rather than a time trial or track trial or whatever other name they want to call it.

www.autocross.com - They have a list of clubs (both SCCA and non-SCCA) by state there.

Technically TrackDaze does, but you have to purchase one of the transponder things to get the times.

HPDE sounds like doing laps aimlessly.

And seems you have to do so many HDPEs to even get a TT license in NASA track driving however you can earn a license in a weekend w/ EMRA. Furthermore, NASA Rally you can race in a more dangerous environment (no cushy tire walls, run-off area and much limited 'corner workers') w/o any in-car driving instruction at all. What makes driving in NASA TT so difficult?

Trackdaze doesn't release the times until the event is over. I've been using the cell phone app Trackmaster. Serves my purposes well enough.

Hmm. Getting timed causes some people drive beyond their ability, and throw in being out there with other cars and people can get dumb. Perfect example:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UGR0YN40PIU

In the Rally are you wheel to wheel with other cars or pretty much by yourself?

No. Not at all. An HPDE stands for High Performance Driver Education. It's an opportunity to learn and have fun, not go for the quickest lap times.

And besides, some people actually enjoy just driving fast and having fun in a safe, controlled environment. It's not always about going as fast as possible at 10/10ths.

I don't see that as a positive. I've instructed a lot of people that would be so lost and/or dangerous on track without instruction. And it's the people that don't think they need an instructor, and are overeager to run solo, that are usually the worst drivers.

You have to earn it showing that you are safe, aware of other cars, flaggers, rules and procedures, car control,...... whole check-off sheet evaluation by instructor. Then it is possible in a weekend, not a giveme.

There is passing in rally; in the dust, in the weeds, eating rocks. There are procedures to attempt to keep faster cars starting (usually) a minute ahead of the next guessed slower car but doesn't always work as planned. Like TT in most circumstances if a team is aware of being caught from behind, they yeild to team catching them. But more difficult in rally for leading team to know they are being caught because poor visiblity by dust out rearview and more concentration forward than on a track trying to go quickly on a road you didn't just drive a minute ago and know the best places to glance in mirrors. Sometimes the passing is way more nuts, like when you commit and the road narrows, culverts, stumps, rocks, stopped other rallycars,.... Passing is not the difference between the requirements.
