Has anyone signed up for the March SCCA PDX? Looks like registration is finally open. I might just do one day. Not sure if Sat or Sun yet.

So what's your impression of the track? Big difference, or just smoother?

There is extra pavement on the outside of the curbing on 3, 10 and 12 which can be utilized if you're being aggressive. Course is really smooth. At this point there are no reference points on the track. No lines are painted and the start/finish podium and tree at the front kink are gone. It's tough to know where to catch the kink perfectly. Also no reference points around Oak Tree either. Maybe some of that will change once the track is painted.

Just signed up for the PCC Audi Club event @ Summit Point. Of course, I haven't gotten around to installing an Accusump, as I said I was going to before taking the CTS-V back to the track, but I can't help myself.

A couple guys commented over on Corral (Mustang forum) after running that NASA event. One guy said he picked up 2.2sec on the new pavement.

Completed a (mostly) successful first outing of the season in the Caddy. Had a catastrophic rotor failure that fortunately didn't result in anything other than a broken rotor, and other than that it was a good weekend. Weather was very good Saturday, albeit windy, but Sunday was in the 40s and felt even colder because the wind hadn't died down completely and there wasn't much sun to speak of.

I had noticed in the week leading up to the event that there were 20+ cars in the Black run group, and only 10 or 11 in Blue, so I offered to demote myself to Blue. The organizer was perfectly happy to do that, but said since they typically combine Yellow and Blue on the 2nd day that I would go back to Black. Whatever. So, I ran in Blue with Delmar and the rest of the Blue group on Saturday, and then Black on Sunday. Due to the rotor failure I ended up only doing ~2-1/2 sessions on Saturday, and then ran 3 on Sunday (skipping the last one so I could pack up and make the 4hr drive home).

A couple laps on Sunday:

Edit: Here's the rotor failure clip. WARNING: Turn down the volume before you start the clip! The battery in the mic was dying (which I didn't know until I got back to the hotel that evening), and when that happens the mic feeds a ton of noise into the video recorder. Very frustrating, as I wanted to hear how things sounded beforehand and at the instant it failed.

Wow. That rotor failure was definitely a pucker moment. Glad you and the car are OK. That good have been so much worse.

Otherwise, the video looked good as always.

I ran on the new surface this last weekend with NASA. The big changes are through 3 and oaktree. For turn 3, the tracks significantly wider and you can carry quite a bit more speed through the corner.

For oaktree, the exit is a lot wider, enough that it fundamentally changes the line through the corner. I like it a lot better now. It has a much better flow. The new pavement is also quite a bit grippier, and my apex speeds were higher everywhere.

There's more pavement on the exit of 10, but it really just serves to bail you out if you run off the edge of the curbing on the exit. 10's never really been critical for a great lap anyways.

I think 2 - 2.5 seconds is a fair assessment of the speed increase. I ran a 2:18.2xx in a Spec Miata, which I think is about 2 seconds faster than the previous record. There's definately more time on the table. Already looking forward to May.

Made a couple of minor updates to the calendar. If anyone catches wind of any changes to a club's schedule, or knows of an organization that isn't included here, let me know.

Has anyone seen or heard anything more about the Jefferson Circuit expansion? Summit Point's website doesn't say anything new, still the same note on the Jefferson page - "The Jefferson Circuit is currently under construction with extensive upgrades. Stay tuned for information related to the construction progress." I just posted up on their FB page to see if there are any updates.

Not sure what my next event is. Still need to figure out what I'm doing with my brakes.

I was there last weekend. Ran a 2:17.7xx in warmup in Saturday and a 2:17.9xx in qual on Sunday. Still finding improvements in the new layout.

Next up: Hyperfest.

I did the TT with EMRA at Pocono Raceway last Saturday (May 3rd) and although the event didn't go 100% smoothly I still had a BLAST. Coming off the infield at about 80 mph onto Turn 1 and blasting around on the 14 degree banking is just stupid fun. There were some timing issues in the morning and then in the afternoon a girl in a Formula Ford smacked the wall on Turn 1 coming off the infield. She was okay (as in not dead or dying) but they took her to the hospital so we were just hanging out until the ambulance came back.

Anyway, here is a real short video (15 sec) of me coming off the infield and going part way around Turn 1 to about 110 mph.

Very tempted, but I'm already taking a long Memorial Day weekend. I don't think work would appreciate me making it a 2-day work week following a 3-day work week (since I would want to take Friday off for the track weekend).

At this point I'm thinking the late June Chin event at VIR is probably my next event. It's a Wed/Thur event, so a little weird, but I should be able to swing that. Then probably do the Trackdaze event at Summit over 4th of July weekend.

I signed up for the June Chin event at VIR. I was at VIR last weekend with NASA. Turning some quick laps for me. I need some grippier tires. A friend of mine rode with me and he said it felt like my car was totally loose. Certainly doing a lot of sliding.

I think just moving to a 17x9 with 255/40-17 R-Comp tires will make a big difference. You could go all the way up an 18x9.5 with something like a 275/35-18, but that's a much more expensive proposition.

Tim I think you're right. I think I'm going to round up a set of 17x9" rims. Any suggestions? I know MachV has their Awesome which is fairly cheap and light.
What specific Track tire would you recommend?

Also I might be picking up a set of used StopTech brakes to replace my Wilwoods. I burned up my last set of rotors in only 4 days with the Wilwoods.

Looks like progress is coming along really well at Thompson Speedway up in CT. Mark DaVia, who I used to auto-x with 10+ years ago, and who has since gone on to win One Lap of America 5 times in a row a few years back, got to do some exploratory laps yesterday. He posted the video and some comments up on Facebook.

I have some good video with the Lou, the Motorsports Club directors, but the audio didn't work correctly and I'm working on fixing it.

It's 98% complete... 250' skid pad (with or without water), autocross lot, possible go kart track, four more garages (one with lifts) are planned, pay at the pump race gas, 26 stall garage, race control tower, EMT room, training room, retail space, hats, jackets, key chains... it's all there!

European style variable resistance barriers arrive next Wednesday, no tire walls at all. Processed road millings for the run-offs in the corners instead of grass, tamped down so it's almost like pavement but no oil for the binder so it's just loose enough for tires to grip it.
I was impressed when the video started with Mark next to nice looking garages , and it sounds like the rest of the facility is being done right, too. I look forward to getting up there for an event later this year.

The response from Summit on FB a few days ago: "It is coming along. The long cold winter delayed things significantly but we are now making progress. We should have an official update coming soon."

I think the NT01 is still probably the best bang-for-the-buck. They're certainly not the fastest, but their longevity is good.

I think the MachV Awesome is a good bet. On a budget, there are of course Rotas too (DPT and Grid both come in 17x9 +42). I have a set of Weds and Advans, both of which I got awesome deals on in the classifieds.

NT-01 is definitely the best bang for the buck, and a good first r-comp to transition to from street tires. I'm currently running the new Maxxis RC-1, and so far so good.
