Talking Im new with a brand new '01 2.5 RS...what should I do?

I just bought a brand new '01 Impreza 2.5 RS two weeks ago. I am a rookie in this feild and I have no idea what I should do with this new found glory of a car. Ive put a K&N air filter but thats it. I need some help with ideas and maybe some one to show me the ways of the Subby Wolrd.

Thanks

Thumbs up

Intake, exhaust, bigger rear sway bar, strengthened swaybar end links, front and rear strut tower bars, a good set of tires, short shifter (if you have a manual)... the list is pretty long as to what you can do, and I didn't even start on the exterior stuff you can do! Enjoy the car, and learn how to drive to get the most out of that AWD system these cars have. Within the law, of course Welcome to the club!

You have a Rally Blue MY 01 RS?
The first and the best mod should be the crappy driver (unless the driver already has taken classes). Search the Powertrain forum if you are looking for more power. Sorry to bust your bubble, but the RS is not meant for straight line racing if that's what you're into. If your car is new, then take it easy on the first 1000 miles (no revving above 4000 RPM and no mods, I guess the K&N is okay). This will ensure the longevity of your car.
Also what do you want to do: Turbo or stay N/A?

Turbo: search for "turbo" in the powertrain forums.
Manufacturers: JC Sports, Minnam (now AMR), ASR, Ludespeed, Vishnu, Rallispec or drop an imported motor from Japan in.

N/A: Headers, catback exhaust, intake, cams...

The Suspension can be upgraded to Prodrive, STi, CUSCO (hehehe $$$), Syms...

Go to these sites: www.autocaresubaru.com www.cobbtuning.com www.imprezars.com (There are many more, but that's all off the top of my head right now)

Congrats on the new car.

Hey Kurt - welcome to the club.

Also try out www.spcr.org for "subaru performance club of the rockies" - it will link you to our egroups mail list (now yahoogroups) and to my major links site.

If you are looking for mods, I have a selection of affordable mods you can choose from.

Lastly, you should also visit www.rmsolo.org for the Rocky Mountain SoloII list and get the autocross schedule. There is one this Sunday at Coors Field 27th street parking lot. With street tires you should run in "street touring class" as a novice, and look at what suspension and tire mods they have done to be competetive. Bring white shoe polish and be prepared to buy magnetic numbers soon. For magnetic numbers, you will want the letters S T S, a pair of number 1 and then a pair of two of your favorite numbers - I went with a pair of 1's, and four 6's so I can be:

6, 9, 66, 69, 96, 99, or 16, 19, 166, 169, 196, 199

Feel free to email me anytime with questions!

Try Driving the Hell out of it for a while & then start changing what you don't like, but find out that you don't like the suspension or lack of speed or what ever it is before you throw money at it hand over fist. It would suck to drop some serious dough only to find out that what you had was plenty. Of course it you have a ton of money I could always use a sponsor...HAHA

The best advice is what Strepto has said. Decide what you want out of the car, what activities you want to do with it.

The type of mods you'll want will vary, if you set your car up for track racing, it won't be as fast in autocross. If you set it up for AutoX, it won't be as fast for track events. If you'll be doing a lot of drag type events, it be as fast for tracks or AutoX's. Same for RallyX's and Ice racing..

You get the idea.

First thing I am looking towards is a JC Sport air intake. I want to through a new exhaust on but not sure what the best bet is (JC Sport or Stromung Dual Tip). I am slowly getting my miles up( Im up to 897 miles on this beast). I drove for ever yesterday and the day before, making sure not to bring the rpms past 3.5-4k (Im up to 897 miles on this beast).

Now what does a rear sway bar and a front strut tower bar do exactly? Just makes the subby handle better?

Im sorry to sound like such an amateur but guess what...I am!

I want power but what to mod first?

Sounds like you want to do what I had done to my 99RS.
1)As for the sway bar I was really pissed at myself for waiting 8 mos to put one on. The 20mm SPD bar made the biggest difference to my car, basically I would say it makes it 10 times easier to get the car to rotate at lower speeds(read speed limits). Before I put it on I found it difficult but not impossible to drive the car with the throttle into & out of corners(was only easy to do at highway speeds & above). After I could enter a corner hard lift the throttle slightly and the rear end would come out & I could modulate or punch the throttle depending on the corner. Just be careful due to the now tail happiness of the car under hard braking or emergency stop situation when not going in a straight line i.e. the best place to drive the mountains.
2)Front strut bar didn't have one but people I talked with that did said it wasn't nearly as noticeable as the sway bar & not to waist my duckets
3)Intake I made mine but it was essentially a jc intake after comparing the two & I liked it more for the sound than the performance advantage which was only slightly noticeable.

As for the other stuff you mentioned I only had a kartboy shifter(great buy), But I would definitely recommend auto-x to get the feel of the car when pushed to the limits before making any drastic changes like turbo systems or full on race suspension setups.
Hell come out Sunday to the auto-x at Coors field & I should have my WRX there for you to check out.
Hope I have been of some help.
