Default TEC2/TEC3 & EJ20 - Correct Knock Sensor

Knock frequency is based on engine bore size, which, for the EJ20, is 92mm/3.62in. The bore size for an EJ25 is 99.5mm/3.917".

The knock sensor supplied with my TEC3 (which I'm assuming is the knock sensor sold by Electromotive) gave pure crap response on my EJ20. Noise levels 50-70 (on a 0-100 scale) centering around 3500 rpm, and then dropping to 15-20 at 7000 rpm - not at all what was actually happening. Spikes to 100 when there was definitely no audible knock, and zero response when there was definitely audible knock.

I needed a GM knock sensor tuned/designed for an engine with a 3.62" bore size. (Tuned to sense knock at 6250 Hz) After researching it, I've found one.

Borg Warner p/n 8009 or S8009
OE #'s 1103700 or 10456019

Buick 88-94
Cadillac 88-90
Chevy 88-92
Chev P/U 92-95
GMC 93-95
Oldsmobile 87-94
Pontiac 88-94

This knock sensor works just like you would expect a knock sensor to work. Noise levels up to 30 at 7000 rpm, increasing with a nice steady trend. Definitely senses actual knock.

Closest I could find for EJ25 is is a knock sensor from an LS1 or LT5 chevy 350. Both have a bore of 3.900, compared to your bore size of 3.917

Wow, thanks for the info!

Can I ask what you referenced for the GM bore sizes?

And would you have the PN's for the LS1 OE sensor and borg warner?

Thanks!

I referenced autoparts store's catalogs of engine rebuild kits. Basically went page by page to find motors with specific bore sizes.

I don't have the PN for the LS1 sensor, but if you search for this thread on the Vishnu boards, somebody has it.

Well, you should have the owner's manual... What's the bore size for that engine?

Unless that s10 has a aluminum block and heads like the EJ25 and the LS1...

Heh, the EJ25 is like 1/2 of a LS1 right?

So where can we change GM references for other engines? My EJ22T is a different bore so I need to see what's best for it. I plan to run a TEC when I put the engine in next spring hopefully.

Like I said, I had to go down to the autoparts store and pour through the catalogs for engine rebuild kits. Dealers didn't have a good info source, couldn't find any good sources on the net...

ok

the 2.5L for 1985-1990 and maybe later is a 4.0 (101.6mm) bore.

the 2.0L and the 2.2 vortec is a 3.5 (89mm) bore
