Default Road trip: Houston to Portland, Maine.

Ok, I've got to go to Portland, Maine in November, and in a moment of madness thought about driving...

It's 1950miles and around 32 hours according to mapquest

I've done 600miles for 3 straight days before on a bike, which was ok, if a little tiring.

Anyone any thought? 2 days or 3 days? Anyone done anything similar?

i used to drive 1385 mi. straight through from Galveston to NW Ohio in 20-22 hrs. These days I don't push it beyond a 12 hr. drive due to safety. We drove 750 mi. to Topeka in 10.5 hrs and 11.5 hrs back in Sept. rather comfortably, but there were 2 drivers. I'd say plan on 3 to be safe, it really depends on if you HAVE to be there in a hurry or not.

My brother and I drove a u-haul to NY in 2 days. Course we drove in 4-5 hours shifts or every tank fill. I used to drive back and forth from Colorado where I used to live to Houston to visit my brother before he passed away in under 21 hours. I had a monte carlo SS at the time.

24 hours, non-stop, from Orlando, FL to Portland, Maine (actually a little further north). Didn't shut the car off once, even at the gas stations. This was in August actually, not to long ago. There were five of us, so we just took shifts. We were in a Town and Country Mini-van so it wasn't so bad, but none the less we got sick of eachother.

17 hours, stopped for five hours of sleep, Orlando to Dallas, this was also in August. This time, the trip was made in my RS Turbo, a little more cramped, and only with two people.

Should be able to do it in 2 days.

I've made several seattle to philly trips around 3000 miles...... 2 1/2 days. 50hrs of driving time, 60hrs total trip time.

Also, have done philly to memphis, memphis to houston, and houston to seattle.

You should be able to make it up to some place in TN/NC area.....assuming you take I-40.....that is pushing it though.

What route you taking.

After about 17-18hrs in the car of driving......it's going to REALLY wear on you. If you had an additional driver it wouldn't be real bad.

I'd say plan on at least 3 days, unless you're just going to haul butt on the interstates the whole way and miss some cool sights along the way.

We got back from Indy in a day and a half, a very *long* day and a half.

But if you're young, go for it in two and learn to like coffee

Have fun

Ok, I think a 3 day trip both ways would be best, after all, if I just wanted to get there I'd fly (work would pay, along with a hire car).

I just thought it might be nice to see a bit of this godforsaken country before the nice people at the INS (probably) pull my visa next year.

i drove from houston to NJ and it took 22 hours. i got a ticket for doing 102(really 106) in TN. I would do it again cause it only cost 109 bucks!! anyway, plan on 2 very long days, or 3 short days. I will do it again for a tunning stop at TurboXS and then go chill at the jersey shore(it isn't as bad as everyone says it is, its a heck of alot better than galveston or padre)

I doubt many would be able to beat my time from Indianapolis, Indiana to Sacramento, California, however I know it's possible.

2,400 miles, 33 hours DRIVING time, 48 hours TOTAL time, I was the only one driving.

You can do this in 2 days, if you do not stop too often. If you like to stop often, plan on 3 days for sure. Most people can AVERAGE 60 mph over the course of an entire trip with stops, which puts you at 32.5 hours of driving. Somewhat unsafe, but if you cruise a little faster, it can be done.

I might need the attorney if our 'human resources' weasels don't pull their fingers out of their corporate butts.

I should of come over hidden in the back of a tomato truck, the process would have been easier. :monkey: INS.

I used to live about 3 hours beyond Portland Maine (thasd further north)

I drove from Houston to My home in Castine Maine twice. Once I was by myself and did it well within 48 hrs.

Watch out for Virginia (or was it west Virginia) they don't allow radar detectors.

Best thing is not to get on 95 until your on your last leg leaving Mass.

You should be following a route that takes you into Penn. through Hartford and up 84 onto 495 through Worcester Mass.

When My wife and I drove it we made it to Chatanooga on the first day, then just past Hershey Penn on the next then home to Main on the third.

Get a nice long book on tape, Lord of the Rings or something else long. And make sure you have one for the trip back as well.

Stop in Kittery Maine on the way to Portland, good shopping (LL Bean Factory Store, drool!!)

Have fun!!
