Would anyone be interested in this? It would be a separate deal from an auto-X. We need a few good dirt roads, though
. I was thinking somewhere in the mountains. Maybe us Denver guys could go to the Springs for a change .Gary

That sounds way cool. Now we just need to find a place to cut loose without getting arrested or destroying our cars.

Weeeeellll..I'm thinking back to my dark hours in the AV room at high school....
How would you guys like to set this up? What was on my mind was getting a camera, stopwatch, and tripod to mount the camera in the car. A digital camera or video doesn't really matter. We could get better cutting and editing out of a tape, though. It's really just a poor excuse to thrash our cars and tape it, too . If we're responsible about it, then it should be okay. I'll ask around and see what I can find. My vote goes for dirt...and the melting snow in the mountains makes for some great subie slop! We'll have to make do with what we find though; I'm not sure what our options look like at this point. There's been some pretty favorable feedback, so this seems worth looking into. Let me know what ya'll find. Gary |

Nothing has to happen this weekend, BTW. If we just want to spend an afternoon getting a few clips set up for each of us, that might work pretty well. No extravagent montages, though. Keep it simple so we can squeeze everybody in and still make decent file sizes. I'll go check out the park service this weekend and see what I dig up. This should still be kept as safe as possible. No 140mph blasts on the interstate! (Damn...)
Dirt sounds appealing, but it kinda limits those people with lowered suspensions. I think we can find good dirt and paved surfaces close to each other. Curvy mountain roads of any surface are not hard to find here . Anyone have any ideas? I'd prefer not to have to block off any roads or anything, but it might be a good idea. Once again, that "proper channels" thing comes into play. |

I've got a few walkie talkies that would help keep things safe. I'm sure somebody else has some as well. I'm also in on any type of drive, dirt/snow/slop/tarmac. When and where???

Any more info on this? I've got a Digital8 Sony camera, and a tripod. With a little work you can secure it in the car, but you get lots of rattling noise on the tapes. Lemme know where and when. I'm picking up the car today!

I went to a ranger station up at Mt. Evans and found out a few things. I have a phone number from someone up there who ran a jeep club. He said we needed a "special uses" permit and gave me a phone number to call.
That's all for now. It's at least something to go on. The next thing is to see how much the permit is. Hope it's not too much. On a run up a few roads, some were still snow covered in spots big enough to spin you out. I'm trying really hard to find something at least CLOSER to the bottom of the canyon. This would preferebly be something on the south side of a mountain, where it gets more sun. I'll check out one more spot that I think might be a good bet tomorrow. ((Vehicle test)) It's still no turbo, but it pulls much smoother now with clean filters and a new 02 sensor. Throttle response lost a bit of it's crispiness, but it can still pull itself along at 1500rpm just fine in stop and go traffic. Top end got such an improvement I can't print it. It's still not a turbo, but it pulls nicely below 3500rpm and kinda screams above it. 0-60 time has definitely dropped, and it has a good bit more torque on demand. The sound is pretty wild, too. It really needs to be recorded. It used to bog and chug, but now it inhales and announces it's arrival. This is gonna be fun .Gary |

Well, some of you know I'm unemployed in the computer field. So I've been pounding the pavement lately...and the keyboard...and my head against the wall
. I have to go outside of denver to find a good road, and up 287 is next. West of Pine has some very good ones. If anybody else knows the area very well, please speak up. I'm at that "shooting darts" point of it, ready to pick up a map and a phone. Bandimere is also opening soon . I also got confirmation from people that work there, face to face, that it is NOT being sold. That's my latest update.Gary |
