Default The Dash Cam Thread

I was hoping to start a good dash cam thread. I know there have been some related ones in the past, but they have been more about recommendations than what set ups people are actually running. I was hoping we could have a place where everyone could post their setup.

There are a lot of great sites out there for info on dash cams. Many have ratings, tests, and reviews that are updated seemingly weekly. What's my point? Peruse those before you start asking questions. Chances are, most if not all of your questions will be answered there.

1st Key to Dash Cams: You get what you pay for. If you're on a budget, that fine, but just realize you won't have the best cam out there. With so many on the market now, even the cheap ones are pretty good, but spending the money still gets you the best.

2nd Key to Dash Cams: Prices vary, even for a specific camera. Just like every other product, prices vary greatly, sometime day-to-day. Do your research and find the best price.

Disclaimer: Often times you will find a camera for a cheaper price, but it is not from an authorized seller, and does not include a warranty. Just something to keep in mind...

Now onto my setup:

Camera: iTronics ITB-100HD

Driver View

Passenger View

Exterior View

Power Source: Hardwired to fuse box, with battery discharge prevention device

Fuse Box View (I have my radar detector hardwired as well)

Battery Discharge Prevention Device

Mods: Black electrical tape over "FULL HD 1080p" bar, drilled larger hole for microphone to improve audio quality

Storage: 32GB SD Card

To keep this thread organized, please post in the following format:

Camera:
Power Source:
Mods:
Storage:

If you have anything other ideas for sections, please let me know.

So how did the dash can work for you?

I have the Lukas LK-7900 ACE with the battery pack. When I turn my car off the battery pack kicks in and powers my dashcam when it detects movement.

Here's my video when I hardwired it in.

Excellent! I kind of bought it on a whim and have been very satisfied with my purchase. The only downside to them is cost. Otherwise you basically have a black box with you at all times.

The camera I purchased is very good. There are better ones out now, but I don't plan on purchasing another one until this one dies. The plan is that I'll swap this one in when I get the '15 WRX.

I strongly encourage everyone to look into buying one. At some point, I think they will become standard on all cars, like backup cameras, but not for a long time. Until that time comes, I'll always have one installed in my cars.

Curious, do you leave yours running in a public parking situation?

Anyone have a rear cam set up also?

Do you enable GPS, or not?

Yes, after visiting Russia a few years ago and seeing the driving there, I was convinced!

Yes, I do. Part of my motivation was parking my car outside for 9 months in a college parking lot where people couldn't care less about their cars. When parking in the city I capture some pretty amusing things.

The camera runs until the battery level drops below my discharge prevention device's threshold.

I do not have a rear cam setup, although I'd like to. Maybe someday.

Yes, GPS is enabled on mine. It's one of my favorite features. When using the provided software I am able to get my speed, as well as position on a Google map at any time of the recording.

does anyone have insights to the G1W or G1Wc? I've had my eye on one of those for a few months now.

The G1WC has capacitors instead of a battery, which hold up better to heat. It's still one of the best values in dash cams. I can PM you a good review link of the G1WC if you'd like.

I just picked up a G1WH wide angle. I love it so far. Easy to install and operate, nice wide angle lens, 1080p @ 30fps, and only $50! The only downside is if you choose to use the supplied cig adapter power supply, you may get radio interference. I will try to take some pics, possibly upload some video as well.

In parking lots, don't people typically ding your doors, or hit your rear quarter panel/bumper while pulling in and out of spots next to you? How does a front facing camera mitigate these scenarios?

For one I back into every spot, so I always have the camera facing outward to the lot. I could count the times I've pulled into a parking spot in the past 3 years on one hand. I also park away from other cars at the back of lots to help prevent other people being near my cars. OCD...

Also, my camera marks in the software where an impact occurred (motion sensor), so if I find damage, I can check the video and figure out the time, place, and vehicle that did it.

I don't have any experience with them, but I think it's a great business for Garmin to get into. Dash cams are slowly becoming more popular in the US, and Garmin has a lot of brand equity here, so it will probably be a logical choice for most consumers new to dash cams.

I have the DVR-027 that is the hyped up direct-from-China radar detector-esque dash cam that I got for $55.00 shipped on eBay. I also bought a 32 gb SD card for $18.29. I've only been in once accident before buying the dashcam (broadsided by a guy making a right on red), but I figured that $75 is a no-brainer.

I've been very happy with my purchase so far, but I do regret not buying the G1. The only reason I didn't is because when I was researching dash cams, I don't think the G1 was out yet. By the time I decided to buy a dashcam (months later) I just assumed the DVR-027 was the best [cheapest] option.

I was about to purchase a G1WC but I thought it was too big so I went with the mobious and bought a capacitor for it.

I just hooked it up today with a cig adapter and it works well. I have everything I needed to hardwire it up for $120

Does the G1WC capture motion/impacts, for when your vehicle is turned off in parking lots?

I believe it would if you have the capacitor model, or have it wired so its always on, but I have mine running to my cig lighter outlet, so I don't have that capability.

How is the quality of the G1WC? Is there good night time vision as well when you see the recordings? What size memory card can you use in that? are you planning on hardwiring it so that it is powered by your car and not have an annoying wire hanging down to your cigarette lighter?
