Default All this snow... Is it time for Ice Racing yet?

Well I've decided...

The WRX will not be ice raced this year. It'll cost too much for another set of wheels and tires. (Around $550)... and I'll have to remove the 4-pots

HOWEVER, I do have another vehicle that will be ice raced...

The Cherokee.

2995 lbs - (Lighter than a WRX)
190 HP @ 4600 (Doesn't matter on Ice/Snow)
225 ft/lbs @ 3000 (More than a WRX at lower RPM... could be good... could be bad)

4WD.... with $50 snow tires (Firestone WinterHawks). Hellooooo class X.

Anything with a snow-service symbol will put you in Y with A/4WD.

It'll be great to see you out there, KC.

I'm definately going to have to try a couple ice races this year. I wanted to last year but couldn't convince myself to make the long drive up there.

I had Stan Jackson Jr. as my instructor at NHIS in April (on that cold & rainy BMW day). He was a cool guy and I guess his family runs/dominates these events. So I look forward to seeing him again.

There's a couple places in NH that the BMW CCA uses.

The schedule should be coming out sometime in November.

no. it's more fun than it sounds. trust me, nothing can compare. last year they ran mainly in feb. they have two different locations, one towards the southern part of NH, and one in the middle that works as well. if the southern one isn't frozen enough, they go to the northern one.

everything is completely safe- they check the ice I think 2 times a week. it's a blast and I hope to see more subies out there.

and yes, the jacksons are a really cool bunch.

speed safely

Don't make me take out the secret weapon with Hakka Q

I might run the Legacy SS in class X.

yea, pretty much with awd- you are either running some sort of snows, studs, or summer/all seasons

that's the only "mods" that they care about

Boston Chapter Ice Racing, at least I'm pretty sure where you'll see updates and schedules. you can also check out that site for more info of any questions you guys may have

speed safely

Amy and I will be there, running her Impreza on all-season Dunlops in class X. KC, you mean I gotta beat YOU??! Or do those tires bump you to Y?

A couple of years ago, Allison and I brought her Mazda B3000 4wd truck:

Conditions that day were wet and snowy. This gave the truck, with its knobby truck tires (all-season, so class X) a HUGE advantage. My only real competition was the Jacksons themselves in Steve's 2.5RS. Steve won, I beat Sarah, and Stan Jr. pulled an amazing final run to nudge me back to 3rd. Fun day. So a truck/SUV can be quite a contender if conditions are right.

We're currently not planning to ice race the Miata again. Last year it was a simple matter of trading wheels with Amy's Mercury Tracer, which normally wore the Hakka NRWs. Now that the car is gone (and, more importantly, its rims), I still have the Hakkas, but unmounted. Could throw them on one of the sets of Miata alloys, but other than ice racing, I don't drive the Miata in conditions that would need snow tires anyway, so there isn't much point. Besides, I've already won in that car, so I'm ready for the new challenge of AWD against many of you guys.

Hey Justin what class do I end up with this combo:

Right leg with no Brace (~January)
84 Jetta GLI
Stock Suspension
Kogan's brand new studded 13" geo metro wide snow tires

Fear me KC!

No brace? Excellent! *air guitar riff* At least the end is in sight.

I think the studded tires would put you in class S, for studded tires. You'd be up against mostly BMWs in that class, so your FWD on studs would have a good chance of doing well. Except that several Jacksons co-drive the M535i on studs...

But hey, it's not like Kogan needs studded tires where he's going.

Fear me once I am shod in the Green Diamond Icelanders in Class Y.
