Waits paitently for the ugly Civic Type R and its possible claim to fame. Finally Honda is stepping up their game on engines.... Looks.... Well they've totally lost it in that department.

Renault has celebrated this "record for FWD cars" yesterday, and that happened

Nissan needs to bring this over as a Nismo Versa or something.

That was a great video.

That thing looks pretty squirrely on some of those corners. Safety car crash doesn't surprise me too much.

RenaultSport Megane review: Richard Hammond says that it is the hottest of hot Renault cars

Mirror motoring expert Richard Hammond says the RenaultSport Megane Trophy 275 is so good that you should ignore the hot Clio and go straight for its big sister

For a very brief moment, the Seat Cupra R held the lap record for a front-wheel drive car around the famous Nurburgring.

Trouble is with holding records, someone always comes along and beats it. Which is what happened to Seat when Renault decided to have a crack at the record with its RenaultSport Megane Trophy 275.

Does being a few seconds slower around a race circuit make the Seat a bad car? Of course not. But the Cupra R is a very different car from the new Renault. The Seat is like a Golf GTI: a very fast hatchback that’s refined and very easy to live with every day.

The Megane RenaultSport 275 S&S Trophy, to give the French car its full name, is quite the opposite.

It’s an angry car that spits and growls and jiggles your spine over bumpy road surfaces. It’s also the best hot hatch that money (quite a lot of it) can buy.

We’ve had this test car for a week and it’s surprising that the driving licence is intact. What a motor!

First, the specs. Take the previous Trophy 265’s 2.0-litre turbocharged engine and nudge the horsepower up to 271bhp (enough to justify rounding it up to 275 for the badges). Then attach to it an Akrapovic titanium exhaust system for extra noise pleasure.

On paper this more powerful Trophy is no quicker to 62mph but it’s faster at the top end. On the previous Trophy the “Cup” pack was an option but here it comes as standard.

And that’s a very good thing because not only does it include a limited-slip differential, but also stiffer springs, dampers and anti-roll bars. The standard Trophy 275 costs 」28,930 but you can spend some extra cash on options to make the car even more track-focused.

Ours has quite a few add-ons, including the somewhat expensive fully adjustable Ohlins dampers.

I doubt you’d notice them on the road but they’re good for bragging rights – as are the Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres at an extra 」1,000.

Then there’s our car’s “liquid yellow” metallic paint. It might cost an extra 」525, but it looks so good that you just have to do it. It’s a cliche, but not many cars could keep up with this car on a bendy road. A BMW M5 tried and had the legs on the Renault in a straight line but didn’t fancy trying to **out- corner the mega Megane. Quite wise.

The car has electric power steering (as have a large number of modern cars because it saves fuel) and apart from the steering on my Porsche GT3, it’s about as good as it gets.

The wheel is wrapped in sexy Alcantara and you can feel everything that’s happening to the front tyres through it.

Bikers are familiar with Akrapovic exhausts but it’s a new name to car drivers. You get lots of lovely pops and bangs through the system as you change down through the six-speed manual gearbox.

A 0-62mph time of 6.0sec doesn’t sound that fast by modern standards but trust me, this car is very quick. It stops quickly, too. But what this hottest of hot Renaults does is provide endless amounts of fun. If you want a calmer drive go for the Seat or a Golf GTI but if you want thrills in a daily dose, the Renault is the motor of choice .

Renault people will like reading this road test but they won’t want to read the next bit. The brilliance of the new Megane RenaultSport 275 S&S Trophy just shows what a ****-up Renault has made of the RenaultSport Clio 200.

The previous hot Clio was a way to get as much fun as the Megane but for less money. If you’ve got the extra money for the Megane, don’t even consider the Clio.
The facts

RenaultSport Megane 275 S&S Trophy
Three-door hatchback
Price: 」28,930
Engine: 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo, 271bhp
0-62mph: 6.0sec
Fuel consumption: 37.7mpg
The rivals

Audi S3: More money, but does have 4wd. Boring compared to Megane, despite 300bhp under the bonnet. 」30,645

Seat Leon 280 Cupra: Superb car at a reasonable price. Easy to live with but still with excellent performance. 」26,945

Volkswagen Golf R: Delivers plenty of performance thanks to 300bhp but can’t match the Renault for thrills. 」29,990
