Default 2008 STI w/98k needs transmission rebuild?

I've been noticing a bit of a growling/grinding sound at very low rpms only in 1st and 2nd gear. Not noticeable under normal acceleration, only when slowly taking off. Transmission fluid was changed by previous owner at 55k and again by myself at 93k with extra S. So naturally I head to the dealership in Morgantown and am met with an estimate of close to $3k for a full rebuild. Any other options or ideas out there or should I just take the plunge and hope to get good news once the tranny is opened up?

Check rotating parts like axles, obvious things like torn boots.

Call Andrewtech before you take it to the dealer, they aren't that far away from Morgantown. They are experts in screwy STI 6speeds.

Making the trip to Andrewtech in the morning. Sounds like it will be worth the drive.
