Default I Surrender Need Utec Tuning Help

I am usually pretty good with this modding car thing. Me and three DSM guys have done all my installs with not a single problem but the tuning is giving us trouble.

Ok I hooked up the utec two weeks ago. It ran fine with the stage 2 map with my mods of APS SR50, 3"catless, fmic, etc. MY only problem of course was that my injectors were maxed out at 13psi. So I installed 650cc two nights ago. Install was a breeze and I thought everything would be fine. I change UTEC setting to stage 4 map that I had on there to get a little closer to my setup. The car had trouble starting and was running very rich (of course) We leaned out the idle to -4% and it ran fine.

My problem is here .... from 3000 rpms with TPS to 95% The car is running nasty rich and blips and goes lean (because of too much fuel). So we try to lean out to -40%.. no help ...-50%....no help....all the way to -85% with no results still says rich and feels like it hits fuel cut. I know the UTEC is changing fuel because I see the result at idle. I just want to know why I don't see any results with TPS to the floor. (When I run TPS at 17% the car runs smooth all the way to redline which is being run by stock ecu) I have not messed with timing or boost since I can't even get my fuel straight. I apologize for the long post but I really need help. I was hoping to run in battle of imports tomorrow but it does not look like I will be able to do that. Any help is appreciated.

Sam,

Your fuelling #'s are totally off. Here's my advice:
1. Go back to the Stage 4 map that is set up for the Sti injectors.
2. Make sure the rotary switch on the back of the UTEC is set to the position that the Stage 4 map is on.
3. Multiply the fuel map load columns 70-100 by 1.1 and start tuning from there in very small increments. Remove maybe 0.5% fuelling at a time. Although we have not tuned injectors of that size with the UTEC, I would doubt you would need to go any lower than -15% to acheive a reasonable 11:1 AFR.

I'll assume you at least have an EGT gauge if not some form of wideband O2 sensor to tune your fuel by. If not, put your stock injectors back in and lower your boost until you do.

In any case, you should seriously consider going to Knowledge Performance in GA for some tuning. They have an AWD dyno and have some experience tuning WRXs with UTECs. Nathan and Phil will be going down there later this year to give them a bit more hands on training. I can't find their phone number now but will post it here later.

Call us toll free at 877.887.2679 if you want to discuss this further. Tech support is much more effective over the phone than over e-mail or the internet.

One more note, I just talked to Sam, and I want make sure that this doesn't happen to anyone else.

The load reference for the fuel and timing maps is MAP pressure not TPS.

As set from the factory the UTEC runs the "0" load zone up to 60% throttle (to work with the closed loop to open loop transition of the stock ECU) then from there up the rest of the zones (10%-100%) are MAP ranges from 0psi to 18psi.

You can alter this setup in the parameters menu, but if you are tuning from the 80% zone and up when you are only running 7psi of boost, you will not see any results!

Knowledge Performance's phone number is 678-445-0688. You might want to give them a call and set up a dyno tuning appointment.
