Default F'n Stumped: Stock radio won't turn on but HAS power

02 wrx
Searched to my little hearts content so now I come to ask for help...

Short and sweet version. Use to have aftermarket radio, got taken out many a years ago, wanted to go back to stock, have 2 stock units and neither of them work IN MY CAR...

Regardless of the keys position when I plug them in, I can hear the CDs cycle and can see a little red light on the inside on but NOTHING happens... Can't get to turn on, have no light on it etc.. Have no other crazy symptoms with the rest of the car, have checked all fuses and everything... One of the reason I went back to stock was because of ease of install damnit...

And just to be clear have the 14pun plug that goes in the back, antenna, and ground that plugs into radio, but for some reason I also have this little short plug that has a purple and orange/white wire with female spades in the plug and not sure what that does...

Thanks in advance for any help, I really hope I'm just stupid and forgot something...

are you sure the stock head units are stock to the year of your vehicle?

everthing I find is that there is a 2 wire plug that provides illumination to the HU. Do you have any pictures of the plug and the back of your stock HUs?

I'm 100% that they are for my year, they're black and say Subaru as well as have 01 build number on them...

I do not have any pictures right now (at the dentist ) but as soon as I get out I'll snap some...

But its the standard 14pin plug, antenna, ground that goes to the plate, and a white plug with 2 female spades inside and the spades have an orange/white and a purple wire coming off...

Edit: But the back of the raidos has a second spot for another multiple PIN plug not for spades... Wonder if I'm missing that?

Edit 2: It appears the the second 16 pin plug goes to an external CD changer that I don't have, as if a 6 disk want enough...

Check for 12 volts at the power pin in the harness (key in acc or on position).
if no power replace the fuse.
being able to get the cd's to cycle or load w/ the headunit off may not mean it's getting power through that 12 volt wire as I think it uses the constant 12 volt "memory" power to do this.

That extra plug w/ 2 wires looks like a 12v plug (cig lighter) harness to me. I've never seen a headunit w/ a plug like that.

take a look at the picture in this thread. Seems like this is the spot your connector needs to connect to.

But that's a 2011 radio right? I don't have that in my head unit... And still doesn't work BTW :-(

I plug it in just to hear em cycle and nothing else... Pisses me off

Yellow/blue stripped wire of the harness... (Doin that so I remember later..)

Also my car came with a turbo timer and a triple gauge pod, however it doesn't look like anything DIRECTLY goes into my harness for my radio... Any suggestions on if we think that's the cause?

Also if it is a bag ign switch or something how could I test for that or try and diagnose it?

PS thanks for the ideas :-) Not having a radio is getting really old

I know you've done some troubleshooting, but it really sounds like a pin-out mismatch. Hopefully you didn't accidentally connect a + directly to the ground.

Is this a new issue or have you always had this issue as well?
Was everything installed by you or by someone else? (i.e. original aftermarket radio, gauges, turbo timer, etc.)

I would get a pin out of your car, and start to do some deep diving with a multi-meter. Find out what circuit is suppose to have what voltage and start testing.

You will also want to start doing continuity tests on each circuit after your verify voltage. This will tell you if you have any broken wires.

I had an aftermarket radio in many moons ago and it was removed as she became a project car again... Fixed all mechinal issue and got her driving around again and decided I wanted a radio but didnt wanna do this bull**** so got a factory one and all this started...

Everything (turbo timer, gauge pod, boost gauge) was installed when I bought the car... I have my gauge pod half disconnected cause I wanna remove it.. That wouldn't cause this right?

It all depends on how things were connected. It's hard to say without seeing it. I would just start chasing wires and see what you find, sounds like your best bet right now. It probably is something simple, but still have to find it.

Get static out of speakers now but nothing else... Powered turns on and off via power button and can control the volume of the static, but nothing else... Works on ACC also and turns off when it should

Can get static to come back by wiggling wires in harness but not one wire and only if I get lucky

If your wiggling wires and going between static and no static that sounds like a bad connection or a short somewhere in the circuit.

Have you started to deep dive your circuit yet?

Honestly, at this point in time, I would find a good shop nearby you and take the car to.

It could be a bad connection in the radio, in a plug, or a wire that rubbed on metal and is shorting out.

You may not have the issue directly behind the radio, but you have to remember that circuits from the radio run all over your car.
