Default Air Conditioning Removal

Well winter has come and AC has become useless for 6 months, would it do me any good to remove my AC? I guess my real question is, is there anyy adverse side affects to removing the AC compressor to take a bit of extra pull of my crank? Thanks a lot

Josh

your a/c compressor actually free wheels when its not in use, so if your bet wasnt on it you could actually spin the compressor pully with your hand and it would keep spinning for a second or two. the power streeting pump is what has drag on the motor cause if you take the belt off and try to spin that it actually take effoert to move and wont spin after you let go. so by taking you a/s out your only saving weight, dont get me wrong when you a/c is on theres drag on the motor but when its off it freewheels.

Don't forget that defogging your windshield needs the A/C to do a good job. Besides cooling the air, it also takes all of the moisture out of it. If you noticed, when you hit defrost/defog on the selector buttons (the ones that change from head, feet, etc) it automatically turns on the A/C even if you don't have the A/C button pressed. So.... you may not need the cooling in winter, but you will almost definitely need to defog the windshield. My $.02 in addition to awdwagon's probably more useful advice :-)

Which I think is a drag because it isn't allways needed to keep the windows clear.....it helps when you first get started up or on a not so cold but rainy day (when you cant crack the windows for venting), otherwise, it would be nice if, while on "vent" or "vent and floor" or "floor only" you had a small amout of the heated air drift across the windshield so the compressor won't have to run (and subsiquently shut off when I need a good "quick pedal")...........but, all things considered, if that was the case, some people would never run the compressor (during the cold months) and it needs to run every now and again for lubrication purposes......
