Question Electrical problems?

Hey guys, try this one on for size.

I hadn't driven my car in 3 days. Went out of town and took the wife's car.

Wanted to take my baby out for a little drive tonight when I got home. Thought it was a little odd that the interior light didn't come on.

Stuck the key in and nada. Totally dead. Didn't leave the lights on (can't happen), didn't leave the interior light on, and the doors were fully shut too.

I got her jumpstarted and let her idle for a while. Even checked the battery with a multi-meter while she was running. Everything seemed to be fine. I tried backing out of the garage and she died. I shut off everything and started her back up.

I eventually got her out into the street, but she kept wanting to stall. I kept the revs up at the stop signs and left the neighborhood. I went through some back roads to get to the feeder.

I eventually jumped on the highway, drove a few miles, did a u-turn and came home. Car ran great just like nothing was wrong. It almost stalled at a stop sign near the house.

Another weird thing happened while I was resetting my radio stations. The revs jumped up over 2k and stayed steady. The fan was off as were the headlights. The only accessory on was the radio.

I took her back out for another drive and the revs stayed up around 2500 while in second gear. Very strange.

Kind of worried the battery may be toast, but I'll check it out in the morning. I have several theories as to why the battery went dead. 1) There is a short in the alarm somewhere. I'll have to get my multi-meter after it. 2) The trunk light isn't going off. I'm not sure how to prove this except by crawling back there and letting the wife shut the trunk. Do I really want to try that?! Not!

Any words of wisdom would be greatly appreciated. I may have the dealer check into it when I go for my 30k service. Thanks.

Adam

Adam, It could very well be a bad battery. I had the same problem with my MR2. I let it sit a while and the bad died. I doubt very seriously that it is the alarm. In armed or valet mode it will only pull milliamps! Change in temp can have a devestating effect on a battery. If the car reads low voltage the car will jump in revs to speed up the generator and charge the battery. This is almost my exact situation with my MR2. I changed the battery and never had another incident. If you can afford it I recommend a gel cell battery. If you are interested let me know, I am a dealer for Optima batteries.

Thumbs up

Cool deal man. I'll check into it and get back to ya. Are they smaller than the regular battery? You'll have to fill me in on the specifics, pros/cons, etc. Later!

Hi Adam,

I have just replaced a battery in the wife's Civic which had the same symptoms. It could be possible that your trunk light is burning but as you, I'm not sure if it would be a good idea to jump inside unless you have dropped hints of large diamonds to be under the Christmas tree tomorrow morning.

Merry Christmas everyone!

My thoughts exactly John. I think I'd better make up a story like that!

The only problem I have with my car right now is this. One day after doing an ECU reset I was resetting my keyless entry. Right at the point where I had to push the button on my remote my sister's boyfriend walked out and unlocked his truck. From then on his remote has locked and unlocked my car. This is a problem when he unlocks his truck and leaves late at night. Cause then my car is unlocked all night.

No matter how many times I've reset the keyless entry his remote still works. Any suggestions??

Skel, both of your systems are made by Code Alarm. If you code both of his remotes twice it will knock out your codes and you should be good to go. The alarm will only hold up to 4 codes. Try this without your vehicle in close proximity.
