Default Help with electronics...

Please excuse my ignorance, but i wanted to get into electronic tuning but i wasn't sure what does what and what i need. I am building towards an ideal setup of:

exhaust
intake
turbo upgrade
intercooler upgrade
safety & efficiency upgrades (fuel system, spark plugs, bov etc)

My first question is, should i get a new stand alone ecu, or a piggy back ecu. I don't need a crazy amount of customibility or anything, so i was leaning towards a piggy back from TurboXS or Vishnu.

My second quetion is if i get a new ecu, what stand alone electronics should i get, if any? I understand what boost controllers, turbo timers, fuel cut defensers, afcs, etc but i don't know which tasks the ecu already handles. I would appreciate any advice anyone could give me. Thanks guys!
