Default An Open Letter to ECUTek

We would like to make a formal public announcement regarding our ability to Flash program the MY01/02+ Subaru ECU. While we are not as close to releasing a final product as you (ECUTek), we hope to make you aware of the fact that we've already invested our own time and money into this capability.

Our goal of this announcement is simply to make ECUTek, as well as the general public, aware of our intentions. We do not want any misconceptions that we have stolen any of ECUTek's intellectual property.

Due to the fact that we've been very quiet about our research into this ability, we felt it would look very suspicious for us to release a similar product so shortly after ECUTek's solution becoming available in the USA. Thus, we are making a preemptive announcement in hopes that we maintain the proper perceptions for both of our respective products.

From the little I know of ECUTek and their products, I have no doubts of their quality and performance and that a WRX owner or tuning facility will be making a wise investment in their software. Furthermore, we have no further information to release about when our product will be available, any method in which we'll make it available, or any pricing information. When this information is available, it will be posted on our web site and our forum.

Kind Regards,
Trey Cobb

A sure way to prove that you have made the progress you claim prior to Ecutek release would be to state the addresses of some simple ECU parameters such as RPM and boost limit in any of af411, af422, af423, aj030 or aj040 ECUs. This in no way gives away any of your secrets, but lets everyone know the progress you have made independently.

John,

We'd be happy to answer direct questions from ECUTek privately through email. I have no desire to give out critical memory address publicly as I doubt ourselves and ECUTek the only companies developing this type of solution.

Just to prove we're not simply "blowing smoke", here is some non-critical data you should recognize:
05 50 43 6F 70 79 72 69 67 68 74 44 45 4E 53 4F 32 30 30 31

Furthermore, we are developing this fully in-house. Since we have our own in-house AWD Dyno, we can not only reverse engineer the ECU but do all of the testing very quickly and efficiently. This has no doubt saved us quite a bit of time in development.

For anything else, ECUTek can contact me directly at trey@cobbtuning.com.

Kind regards,
Trey Cobb.

Just out of curiosity, who on your staff is doing this work? I didn't realize you were staffed for this sort of thing

Here is our ECU Team hard at work:

And the "ECU" commander:

We just have to restrict the access our lead ECU tech has to the i-club or things could get nasty.

In all seriousness, we have one of the smartest guys I know when it comes to reverse engineering and debugging software and embedded code working for us now. We're actually old friends from back in the demo scene (back when people use to actually program in 80x86 assembly). And luckily, I actually went to school for computer science so I do all the easy stuff like finding the data tables. It makes it real easy to "see" stuff when you know what to look for.

Regards,
Trey Cobb.

Cool, I'm an EE and I build embedded systems for a living (hardware and software). I've never been down the reverse engineering road though. Certainly sounds like fun!

Trey-
If you don't mind me asking and it doesn't give away too much.
Is this going to be a fully tunable system or just a preprogramed curve to download? If it is user tunable will you sell the software with it or only to authorized Cobb dealers?

It sounds like you have quite the system ready to go, good luck!

Dylan,

It's too early to give any exact details as to how we're going to distribute this product. Overall, there is no "perfect" way to do it. So, we'll weigh the opinions and determine which best suits both the market and us.

That being said, we wouldn't be spending all the time and effort doing this if we didn't feel we could do it better.

The best I can say is to keep checking the web site for additional information. Sorry I can't provide any more information.

Regards,
Trey Cobb

Makes me feel all warm and fuzzy knowing Trey is just down the freeway from me

If it makes you guys feel any better, we hounded Trey about this at the grand opening and we couldn't get any more details out of him.
