Default FS: salvaged 2002 wrx silver

hi,
a few weeks ago someone stole this car from a dealership near my house. the car was stolen and then recovered by the police a week after and returned to the dealership. the dealer is a good friend of mine so he asked me to help him sell the car. the car is a 2002 silver wrx, 5speed, less then 500mi. the car has everything except for the doors, air bags, hood and front bumper. the engine and tranny are still new and so is the interior. i think this car would be perfect for someone who wants to build a race car or just have a car to beat on. the asking price for the entire car is 14,000 obo. however if no one wants the car as is, we are willing to take it apart and sell the parts. please let me know if you have any questions or if you are interested. i will take pics of the car tommorow and post it here.
thanks

Although there's no way I could swing this, could you clarify the "missing" parts? Were the parts stolen off the car or damaged during the joyride?

Ditto to Sean's questions. Banged up doors/hood/bumper are much different from stolen and taken away. If they were completely removed, was it all 4 doors or were some still in place? Also, is it a salvage title? If so, I'd expect that there is no longer any SOA warantee. And last, would the dealer take a trade in?

thanks, jack

I would think it has to have a salvage title. I don't think a dealer can repair a car and resell it? Does anyone know the "rules" on this. It would be interesting to know.

If these peices are really "gone", why in the world would you do that. Very strange.

Snir,

Judging by the description, I would guess both bags are blown. If the steering wheel does happen to be in good condition with the airbag intact, I would be very interested if you do end up parting it out. Let me know.

Not to hinder this sale, but isn't it likely that the folks who stole it probably spent a good bit of time bouncing the engine off the rev limiter? I don't think that's a great thing for an engine well below the break-in period.

Saying the "engine and tranny are still new" seems a little bit questionable. Of course, this is pure speculation on my part... perhaps everything is just fine. Though I'm pretty sure if I stole a new WRX, I wouldn't be keeping it below 4k.

Do the WRX ECU's log peak RPM's? Can this be checked somehow? Do you know how many miles the thieves put on the car?

I'm asking about the salvage title because it may not even have a title, only certificate of origin, since the dealer never sold it. If they had submitted to their insurance, then the insurance co would own it and it would be assigned a salvage title as a recovered theft. But the posting indicates that the police found and returned the car. In Mass, now, a car that's been put into salvage has to go through a title process that's exactly the same as that of a kit car. Having gone through that myself, I'm not overly worried, but this would significantly reduce the value. (you do have to jump through hoops in front of the State Police....been there, jumped them). In the old days, if you had a car that got totaled, you could simply buy it back from the insurance co for salvage value. You can still do that but cannot register it before going though this process first. Be ready with lots of receipts in triplicate, $50 fee, an appointment and the car on a trailer. You also won't be able to insure it in any way till you clear this process.

hey guys,
well let's start with the questions. i just got back for the dealer after looking at the car. the car title is salvaged due to the fact that they bought the car from the insurance after they recovered it. the reason why somebody would steal these parts is to do an insurance job according to the dealer. the car has been tested by the dealership and everything is in great condition and the car has not been beat on. this is the list of the missing parts: front bumper, hood, left side driver and passanger doors, 2 front airbags, gauge cluster, rear bumper, front side fender. i also talked to my friend and he said that who ever buys this car would get a great price on all the parts that are missing. i will put pics of the car in about 5 min.

So they steal fenders, doors, hood, airbags, and instrument cluster but they leave the Radio?

I know our radio's aren't the best, but that would have been a quickie removal.

well from what i understand, they steal the car and strip it and then the crush another car and claim insurance money but they already have all the parts to fix it. at least that's what my dealer told me. :monkey: to all the people that do that

No offense to you or the dealer, but a dealer telling me "it's been tested and the car has not been beat on" does not reassure me in the slightest (I've been lied to so many times by dealers, I've lost count). How do they test to see if an engine has been abused? What are the signs that a new car has been redlined?

Thanks!

Add 'water damage' to the list of things wrong with the car. Fully upholstered... sitting outside under a tree, am I correct?

This car would make a good stripped down race car tub, but turning it into a regular street car, you'll be asking for other issues.

I think your making a big deal over nothing. How many cars are redline during the test drive? How many new cars are giving to magazine companies to pound on before the car is released? If the motor was going to break or be damaged, you'd no it by now. Your way too concerned about the "take it easy for 1000 miles" clause.

From the looks of it the car was covered with plastic, but it was removed for the pictures. I'm not sure though, but I would hope they wouldn't just leave it outside like that. If they are, which dealer is it parked at?

I've been under the impression that the parts that take the most beating if not broken in correctly are the piston rings. And it will often take thousands of miles for bad rings to really show up...

Lots of folks say that "today's motors" don't really need as much of a break in as they used to. Better materials, better tolerances, etc. But if that were the case, why would the manufacturer still specify a break-in period? Why do many cars create more horsepower after they've been broken in?

And, nevermind the break in period, but let's talk about general care... Do you turn your car on on a cold day, and floor it to the redline before any fluids have a chance to circulate? Or do you wait at least a couple seconds / minutes? If so, why?

I don't think you can deny that some damage might occur if a new engine is abused. Maybe not enough to notice right now, but certianly things will show up later down the line.
