Default Noise! throwout bearing? pilot bearing?

I did a AT swap to MT on my '95 LX, everything seemed very fine up to this monday, I drove down a 75 mph hwy for about 50 miles, when I got to my destination, and slowed down to a stop, I had a whining sound, or whirring, I mashed in the clutch and some noice goes away, but a mix of rumbling, whirring still remains.
I obtained the tranny used, it had about 75k on it and it was still attached to the car.
I've called 3 different repair shops, but since only one of them deals with suby, I'm a little shifty on their answers, two answers were that the throwout bearing was going, but I thought that was only engaged when I mashed the clutch, not when I'm in neutral witht the clutch out. and also the pilot bearing may be bad, the exact purpose of this bearing I do not know.

Anyone help me out?

sounds liek a bad pilot bearing and possibly a bad input shaft bearing...the pilot bearing rides in the center of the flywheel and supports one end of the input shaft, the other end is supported with the input shaft bearing. If the noise changes pitch with the clutch disengaged i's presume a faulyt pilot bearing.

If it goes away when you push the clutch in then its usually the throw out bearing. Otherwise its likely a pilot bearing. I've just never had a car that had a pilot bearing go out on me. I usually change them when I do a clutch job.

neither have i, throwout bearing sure, all the time, input shaft bearings occasionally w/o proper maintenance, but pilot bearings...never.

Another problem that I had only once so far but also sounded alot like a bad throw out bearing. Only the sound didn't go away when you push on the clutch. I had one of the springs in a sprung hub actually break. It was a CUSCO triple puck clutch. The triple pucks are so prone to shuddering that the shudder is likely what broke it. Anyways part of the spring was gone so it allowed play in the center hub as well as the remaining part of the spring to rattle.

Okay, I jumped under my car and pointed out the sound. It seems to be coming from the back part of the tranny, just around where the shift rod enters. This is the noise that is rather constant. I can be at 0 mph and here the sound, or at 50 in neutal and hear the exact same sound. I do not thing it it something rattling around outside the tranny, though that has been a suggestion, which is the main reason I went under the car. Hopefully one of you has had an experience with this, and may possibly assist me in what I need.

Thanks- Eli

Not sure what it is but I bet its going to be expensive. Could be a bearing inside the transmission that is finally worn out.

Hmm,
What bearing is back there? I'm guessing, like, the one that holds the spinning half while it's in neutral. And my service manual seems not to have a diagram of my transmision. What is under the plate on the back side of tranny?
