Default Just a heads up on a Impreza FS in the paper.

I'm still helping a friend look for a Impreza. Well theres one in the buy and sell:

http://www.buysell.com/showad.asp?id=20522355

Looks real nice, owner said he didn't know of any claim history. Was going to make an offer but first wanted to get an ICBC check. Done. Here I'm thinking, "ok wasting another $20 to ICBC" cuz the car looks real nice and drove fine.

Turns out this car has a $14,100 collision claim on it 2 years ago!!! Damn! It looks real nice but I think not worth the chance for future problems. I called him and told him about it and he sounded surprised. I honestly think he didn't know about it as he said he only bought it a year ago himself. He said he go down to $17,500 - but that was before he knew about the claim. He seems like a nice enough guy. Man for $6000 more she be better off buying new (but thats out of her budget for now). This one is ruled out now.

There another Impreza in the paper that has a $13,500 claim on it but it looks like $hit, paint runs, dents all over and the seller said there was a claim of "over $2000" and he only fessed up to the true amount once I told him what the ICBC report said. A very shady seller. That car is listed for $10,500 - 98 Imp - US car also. Stay away from that one I think.

So $40 to ICBC so far but I guessed its saved my friend some potential headaches!

I dunno, maybe those repaired cars would be ok. I don't really know what to say about them. Personally I say stay away because who knows whats underneath or how well the repairs were done. A good deal could end up costing $1000's more a couple years down the road if the car needs more repairs, bodywork... ...

I think shes getting scared off of Subaru's after these two situations and now she's thinking about looking at a used Protege 5's since those are ~$15-17,000 used.

Do the Protege 5's have a good reputation - although they've only been out since 2002.

Anyways just thought I'd give a heads up about those two and if anyone knows of a good Impreza - (automatic) you can drop me a note too - no ICBC claims please

Cheers all! and I enjoy seeing the meet pics of all your cars!

I went through the same situation as you. Except I didn't check the history. I trusted the seller, bought a nice looking car but had constant problems. I ended up trading it in for a new car 6 months later. Better to shell out a few more bucks for a good car with a good history.

Hi, I drive a Protege5 myself, it's only been 2.5 months since I bought it, but I love the car!

Although the Protege5 has only been out for a year in North America, the car itself is not new. It has been sold in Japan, Australia, Asia and Europe for 2-3 years now.

Pros:
The build quality of the car is excellent, interior pieces are generally well-finished. The driving position is comfortable, seats are supportive.
The engine needs more power (only 135hp, 100 at the wheels), but compared to a Honda, there is more torque low down.
The handling is excellent for a front-driver, there is not a great deal of understeer, and handling is easily improved by changing the front strut bar and installing a larger rear sway bar.

Cons:
I drive a 5spd, and the clutch chatters quite a bit in the mornings, this is an issue with plenty of Protege5s. The automatics do not suffer from this problem.
Others have complained of lots of vibrations coming from the car after a while, but I have no problems with that, just turn the stereo up

You probably could get a good deal for a 2002 model right now. Check out Signature Mazda, they are the equivalent of Specialty Subaru for Mazdas, largest dealer in Western Canada too.
