Ok. Was at the Subaru dealer today in TO with a friend whos sister is looking to get a Protege 5.
The dealership there sells Mazdas and Subarus. Looking at the brochure for the protege 5 I saw an option for a auto-dimming mirror/compass WITH outside temperature. It looks EXACTLY like the one in my WRX. So I looked at mine more closely, and there are some empty looking pins/connectors at the back of it.... Well, the dealer didn't have a single Protege 5 on the lot that had that option that I could see, so I didn't get a good look at the mazda one. My firneds sister should get hers as soon as they can locate the color and options she wants, and I'll look at it then... I'll keep you guys posted, unless someone else has any ideas on this.

Hopefully, it *should* be the same Magna Donnelly temp sensor that is used on all Magna Donnelly ECM mirrors with temperature display. If that is the case, then it might truly be a plug'n'play install. |

WRX's don't have the external temperature sensor installed. If you buy the Donnelly mirror - it comes with one which you run from the mirror to the headliner and down the a-pillar, and through the firewall.
Someone has already tested the spare pins to see if they activate anything on the stock mirror, with no joy. ![]() Rich |

I went looking in the showroom today. It looks like the WRX is the only Subaru that doesn't get the ambient temp sensor. The sensor looks the same on all of the Subarus, but doesn't look like the pic of the Donnelly sensor.
The parts guy could order the sensor, but you'd still have to get the harness. IIRC the sensor had wires that were black with pink stripe and black with blue stripe. |

Our Legacy has an AMB temp sensor but it goes to the dash and not the mirror. You can see the outside temp by pressing a button on the HVAC auto climate controls. We use the same autodim mirror as the WRX. If you really want the mirror to have it you'll have to get it from donnely and just use the same harness the OEM one uses and tap into it then run the wire to the temp probe is all. Make sure you get the cam lock type of mounting system.

It's for the temp if you have the mirror that has the proper circuits inside the mirror to make it work. I was the one that probed the harness with a thermocouple to see if it would light up a temp but it won't. They only put that in the mirror that comes w/ the thermocouple. I think they made these mirrors just for subaru and to cut costs they left that part out. But like I say, I found the exact same mirror w/ the temp and compass. Just get that one and tap into the existing harness, it's right up in the headliner by the lights. I can can in the install directions if needed.

It looks like the temp can be put into "no display" mode. Could ours be in this mode? |

If that were the case youd be able to get to display OC or SC according to that.

You win.
How much does the autodimming temp compass mirror cost? I can't get that website to work. |
