Default About to do work in attic. can you touch that pink stuff?

I need to do some work in my attic and may have to move some of the pink fiberglass insulation stuff around a bit. is it ok to touch it or should I wear gloves? does it leave fiberglass in your hands? I need to know pretty quick. Thanks!

Eric

Take a shower right after your done or you'll be all itchy. I installed insulation a few times this summer and the itching was terrible until I jumped in the shower. Not good times...

Make sure you take a cool shower (cold as you can stand), because if you take a warm or hot shower it will open up your pores and allow the insulation to get deeper causing more itch. =\

(btw this also works if you come in contact with poison ivy...well, it helps a little)

more important that gloves: wear a mask... just one of those cheap-o white ones with the elastic band will do.

Breathing fiberglass "dust" is *real* bad or you. The fibers are so small, when they get into the lungs they can effect your body at a cellular level and cause cancer like radiation does (by screwing the DNA up.. wheee!).

I'm not saying one day of poking around in insulation will gve you cancer... but you might as well spend the .30 cents on a paper mask.

Also, if you're generally allergic to stuff (like me) the fiberglass can mess you up when it gets into your skin...

Stuff I wish I had known when I was 12 and I got enlisted by my dad to install cable TV to all our upstairs bedrooms... a weekend of crawling around in the attic w/ zero protection... I looked like a rassberry!

Yeah, wear as much to cover yourself as possible.

Hooded longsleeve sweatshirt
googles
face mask
gloves
long pants

etc.

Not fun finding out what it's like without this stuff...

or you can try the speedo and syrup thing

I was not amused when my GF's parents recruited me to look for a squirrel in the attic. I poked my head up through the tiny attic door and inhaled about a pound of dust and insulation. I couldn't stop coughing and could barely breath.

Asthma + dust + insulation = bad times.

my senses for the most part have been numbed from when i used to shave hex angles on every fibreglass hockey stick i bought (went thourgh one about once a week, did this for about 4 months). the stuff isn't bad at first, but in the following days it will get progressively ichier and make it turn red.
