They don't care if they wreck the clutch. Their method with the WRX was to rev it to 5000 rpm and drop the clutch.

Where do they test their cars at? Could have something to do
with the location...

Maybe they test downhill.

But they've also been giving rolling start acceleration #'s for years now, which gives you a more real-world 0 to 60 (5 to 60, technically) time.

Default fast times

car and driver gets the fastest times because they test their cars in their own indoor track that is located in the perfect location for ideal atmospheric pressure along with a perfectly set temperature.

Wrong. Read this month's article on how they test cars.

They use ringer cars with like 50 extra hp to get the hype out and make you feel nice and warm inside

If you watch "Car and Driver Television" you see how they do it ... half the time they are running on a clearly downhill road. And 99% of the time they are using a G-Tech pro.

Their times are way off..

What!???!? They may use a G-tech on the show (though I've never seen it) but for the mag numbers they use a fifth wheel or a highly accurate gps based system. It's done on D-C's concrete straightaway so I'm guessing there's not a real serious slope unless D-C poured a huge concrete hill

1. They run downhill.
2. They only test cars when there's a strong tailwind.
3. They drop the clutch at redline.
4. They use some secret fuel developed in the Soviet Union (and smuggled from Cuba)
5. They put on those funny looking things on the tailpipe to get 10-20% more HP.

and most importantly,

6. They have 5-6 guys pushing the cars at the start!

The car companies give them a "special" car that is secretly faster than the production model so they can fool everyone into thinking their car is fast

Hmm... Has it occured to anyone that we probably more often use these figures as a comparison against other cars than as an objective analysis of the car's ability? I mean, especially when dealing with variable things like weather and shifting and stuff...

So, whether Car and Driver manages to use whatever magical pixie dust to speed up the cars when testing or not shouldn't make a difference as long as they use it on all the cars... right?

The results go through equations -- SAE correction.

Ya, if ya read last months issue they test cars using a computer, that communicates to 4 of ?? gov't satelites. It's precise. To make it even more fair they run in both directions, to counter the wind.

Considering that C&D (witch I've been happily subscribed to since the 4th grade and have not thrown out 1 issue) has the fastest times, I find that Autoweek has the slowest.
