Tein HAs vs. Cusco Zero 2Rs (GC8)

Right now I have Tein HAs on my RS and I'm contemplating buying a set of Cusco Zero 2Rs. Now, my car is daily driven and all that fun stuff. On top of that, I'm looking to Auto-X next season. Which set-up is the best? This is what I know....

Cusco has the inverted struts where Tein doesnt. Cuscos height can be altered without changing the stroke length for the shock, where with the Teins you could get shorter strokes as you lower
the car, which means you could be riding on you bump stopper a lot more. Teins are 16-way dampening adjustable, Cuscos are 5 way, good or bad? One question is, is the inverted strut better ? Which setup is the best for daily driving and Auto-X? Is is really worth the upgrade?

However i'd say get the JIC's if you are going to upgrade your coils.

Best price point, for what you get.

The only downside to the cusco's or the JIC's is that the rear camber plates make noise. The Ha's use stock mounts so there isn't an issue.

The cusco's are sweet dampening and feel softer than they are.
But the lack of adjustability sucks. Only 4 or 5 points. Plus they are a grip, (of money that is.)

For daily driving, coilovers are noisy but on the right road, on the right day, they're the sweetest thing next to getting poontang.

If you really want to spend a grip of money on new coils try to get a ride in a car with the JIC's and Cusco's.

If you're basically happy with Tein, you could also consider the RA. Those should be at a similar price and performance point as the Cusco Zero 2R.

But if you're happy with the HA for daily driving, and are just getting started with auto-x, I would put the money in the bank for a while, and drive the car the way it is. It will allow you to gain some experience, and you'll get a much better feel for what you need to buy (if anything) to get your car to handle the way you like it.

...i'll second that.

granted, i don't have "real" coilovers, but i don't have any noise problems from my V6/GC setup. probably because i'm using the stock top mounts...

So someone answer me this, what's the advantage to the inverted strut and the unaltered stroke length on the Cuscos?

For some reason, I feel like shelling out money for the Cuscos...I must say though, the ones I am looking at are slightly used.

sti v 5/6 is inverted strut. the stantion diameter is HUGE 40mm - just liek a DMS. its stiff as hell. the inverted has better lateral rigidity bc its simply larger, i would guess larger oil capacity bc its larger (wont over heat), and has interegrated bump stop (less hassle, but you cant trim it if you want to super ghettto slam- bad anyway)

im driving teh inverted v6 struts, and i really want to get the tein RA or JIC, but they arnt inverted to my knowledge, so i havnt bit it yet

The Tein RA and Jic FLT-A2 are inverted! Also, they have a 45mm piston...not 40.

well, as mentioned previously, the inverted strut has a mammoth piston size (my V6's are 40mm), and can take much higher side loads. and being able to adjust the height of the car while retaining the same stroke/strut travel is ideal - you can lower the car say 1.5" or 2" and still retain full strut travel, retaining a decent ride quality and ultimately better handling. that's also why they cost a ****load more, too.

So hmm... Cusco better? Anyone have any experience driving on them daily? MY HAs are fine for daily driving, just the occasional hard bump here and there

The Cuscos are great units, jsut very poor value for dollar (they are very pricey), and cannot be rebuilt in the US.

My choice would either be the RA or the JIC F:TA2..both inverted, both 16 way adjsutable, both GREAt bang for the buck, and bot have the adjustable perch (as does the Cusco's), so you can lower the car and not preload the springs.

The fact that the Cuscos can't be rebuilt in the US is what is really drawing me away from them, the price too. I think I may be holding onto my HAs for a little while longer so I can see what develops, at least I know I can get them rebuilt here.

I have a question for you. Are you upgrading your coilovers because you want to have a better performing autox car? If that is true unless you have been autoxing for the last 5 years actively I GUARANTEE you, that you will not see a difference in the two coilover setups. Just set the car not too low, at half stiff and learn how to drive before touching the car setup.
