Thumbs up Totem Rally is done...

...and it was quite the adventure. IIRC, 31 teams entered. There were at least 2, maybe 3, retirements by the end of the rally: John Mclaren hit a rock, and Cliff had some issues with his new Brantz odo (gulp). One other fellow had a flat on the second to last reg of the rally, near a spot aptly named "the yawning pit of death" in the route book.

Our team had a first-time co-driver this time around, so we were off to a fairly rough start on day 1. Our calulations weren't working out too well and unfortunately had to make use of the sicky bags halfway through the second reg. It was mostly "seat-of-the-pants" driving for me after that. We ended day 1 with some hefty pointage. As usual with these tires, our stock odo was significantly fast, and likewise, the speedo was slower than indicated. (heh, excuses )

Day 2 went much smoother, with co-driver Craig feeling much more confident and discovering "Gravol". The day 2 regs also gave us the opportunity to drive some of the most spectacular roads I've experienced at a TSD. A good mix of gravel, slick mud, ice, and snow. The only exception being the "CAR BREAKING CROSS-DITCH", which could have been followed up with "underbody scraping drop-off in road". They should of had a camera there to witness wheels hanging in mid air. But it was worth it I tell ya.

Big congrats to Peter and Owen for once again taking the Novice class win. Can't wait to see you two switch seats.

-Jeff

Default They saved the best to the last

Totem 2002 was the best rally so far this year (not just because of the result). The roads and conditions were varied and challenging without being too harsh or dangerous. A route book prepared to perfection meant that the result was down to skill and achievement instead of a lottery.

I would like to start by thanking the many members of the rally club for providing another most excellent adventure.

As for the rally, well no real dramas from our point of view but, as always, there's a few stories. I'm really too exhausted to write up a full account right now so this will have to do.

We came into this final event tied for the novice championship with John McLaren and Mark Flemming. It was winner takes all. One other team could take it from way back but would need to win and have both of us do badly.

John had rolled his Trooper on last month's rally and sent that car to the scrap yard. They were out this time in Mark's wife's car. John's wife refused to allow him use of her car because she knew him well "you'll fall behind, race to catch up, drive off the road and wreck it". Wives are all knowing. You don't need me to tell you what happened. Mark's wife's car was on its way to the scrapper on Saturday night.

The custom odometer that Ashton and Eric had built us has been perfect for the previous two events but this was the first time in daylight with Owen in the right seat. I would like to put on record that it performed perfectly yet again and gave us a real fighting chance.

We finished day 1 with a total score of just 7 points. Lying 2nd overall and well ahead in class. For day 2 we just needed to settle down and finish. Unfortunately, Owen was so excited being just 2 seconds off the lead that he hardly slept all night. He made up for it by dozing for an hour while on one of the morning stages. That was enough to double our score and we finished the day with another 10 points total. 17 points after 2 days is exceptional and I'm a very proud dad.

We claimed the 2002 novice championship and achieved more than our goals for the year. We've seen some of BC's most spectacular places, made some great friends, endured many disappointments and prevailed. Most importantly, my son and I have shared in an adventure.

For 2003 we're moving into the unlimited class and we'll be fighting for the overall championship and event wins. It will make for a very busy off season to prepare for T-Bird 2003. Oh, I forgot to mention, we're switching seats. Let's see how brave I am.

See ya out there in 2003 guys.

Congrats guys, and a definite pleasure following you since June.

Now, about the deal we came up with for me giving you the big fat zeros at my checkpoints. When can I expect payment?
