Default Compressor stall problem I think. Also, is there a such thing a wastegate slap?

Hi,

I just got done a big mod install on my car a couple weeks ago. I installed a VF30 and Greddy FMIC with HKS BOV to go along with some other stuff like the fuel upgrades, intake, unichip and such...

Now that I am lost in all diferent kinds of answers from everyone, Is there a such thing as wastegate slap?

Heres the deal...When I shift gears or let off the throttle, I hear chipmonks laughing at me from the glovebox. Kinda sounds like "prl,p,p,p" but high pitched like a chipmonk.

My HKS BOV is working just fine but I cant fix this problem which I thought was compressor stall at first. YES, the sound comes from the turbo and not the BOV! How can I get compressor stall when the BOV is working perfectly???? Is there a such thing as the wastegate opening and closeing at a quick rate and making a p,p,p,p,p sound like a highpitched machine gun?

The only reason I come to that conclusion is because my BOV flutters a lot and I thought that this might cause the wastegate to flutter open and closed on the exhaust side of the turbo. This is my first turbo car so all help is apriciatted.

I have been told by some people that it is just the sound the HKS BOV makes, Is this true? Is the sound normal or am I going to end up with a very broken VF30 in a weeks time due to shock on the blades? If this is normal, then WHAT THE HELL IS THAT SOUND?

Thanks for all the help people.

Well there is a simple way to see if it's a turbo problem. Put the stock bov back on.

The hks bov might have something wrong with it. Barrow someone else’s and see if it does the same thing

Hi,

I have a Greddy FMIC and I had to have the HKS BOV flange welded on so stock BOV wont just slap on there. The HKS BOV worked perfectly on my stock top mount IC without making the wierd turbo sound.

I am thinking that the turbo noises I am hearing are being amplified tremendously by my Greddy Airnx intake. I still dont know what that noise is.

Can anyone please explain what compressor stall/surge sounds like? When I shift, I hear the "Pshhhhhhhh" from the BOV side, and a high pithed "pl,p,p,p,p,p" from the turbo side. Sounds like a chipmonk giggle or a helicopter blade "p,p,p,p,p"

Anyone have my same problems (or noises).

All I want to know is if I am damaging anything.
Thanks guys and gals.

I have the same intake. When I floor it in 5th I get a pht-pht-pht-pht-pht-pht sound. I'm not sure it it's the BOV or maybe the filter itself?

I see you have the Stage4, That includes the VF30 too..cool.

Do you get these sounds as she spools or as you let off the gas? Mine is when I let off the gas. Also, does the sound come from the BOV or turbo.

When my turbo spools, its sounds like a 747 is taking off in my glovebox. Sounds sweet.

Thanks man, I really appriciate your help.

I get the sounds when the turbo is spooling. I think it is one of two things...either the BOV cannot hold the pressure (~19psi of boost), or the foam filter is flapping around.

Nope, mine is when I let of the throttle.

I am going to check for rattles tonight. Gruppe-S told me that there should be no compressor surge when the BOV goes off. Especially at 1psi. If there is no rattles, I am going to assume this is the wastegate frapping itself silly. I should take his oil feed line away .

I had that exact sound on my RS-T when letting off the throttle suddenly at low rpms under rising boost in high gears. What happened on my setup was that my BOV didn't open until it registered ~3 psi. I suspect that it was compressor surge. It was easy to avoid though.

Perhaps you could adjust your BOV to open earlier (mine wasn't easily adjustable) just to be sure?

Edited for sheer stupidity

Thanks for the feedback Rick. How would I go about adjusting the wastegate? and is it really a fix?

The thing that is totally screwed up about this whole mess...Is that there is not one friken person out there that has a definant answer and a fix. I have searched high and low too.

I tried calling a bunch of vendors and I have no luck. I even called Vishnu and all they said is get the HKS BOV recirculating kit because they never heard of this sound before.

I am not going to buy a recirc kit if they arent sure that it will fix it. Gruppe-S told me that a recirc kit will not stop compressor surge and they have never heard the sound I am hearing either.

I will try to get a sound clip or somthing.

Sorry man, I meant to say to adjust your BOV, not your wastegate.. heh mind = fried

I still believe it is compressor surge if it happens at lower rpms as boost is still building and you suddenly let off the gas. It would help to hear a wav of it from the cabin.

Cool thanks man.

I am playing around with the BOV now. I hope I can figure it out.
