Default Rotten Egg smell from exhuast

When I got the car I noticed that sometimes it start to smell like rotten eggs inside the cabin so I checked it out, walked around the car and when I was in the back I smelled it the most, than I noticed it was coming from the muffler. The car has almost 6k miles on it. When my uncle bought a brand new Mazda MPV the smell was there too, but because it was new. It never happened to him again. My Subaru is suffering from this eye watering smell for a long time now.

No, its an automatic. I know how a burnt clutch smells, it's not that.

Thanks SubieGal. I searched and found out that it might be because the car is still new and its buring the remains of the protective coating of something that had to be put on while shipping from Japan, or the other thing is that I am running mest up gasoline.

Chicago gas sucks in the winter. And if you push your car hard (like I do) sometimes you will smell it. I know I have run hard once or twice in a secluded area and once I got to a stop I noticed the smell.

I've got the same thing with my car, I thought one of my dumb friends spilt something in my car. I've got a manual and 21K miles on my 02 Impreza. I haven't gotten out and smelled around my exhaust.

When you get aftermarkey exhausts, sometimes it takes a while for some "glue" or something to burn away and it smells. Maybe it's the same way with a new car? Or maybe you farted?

I had the same smell in a 2002 Impreza TS. It's from high sulphur in the gas and the rich tuned ECU. Use low sulphur gas and there is an ECU firmware update available for 2002 Impreza from Subaru which should decrease the fuel to air richness.

There's an ECU update? How come it's not listed on my.subaru.com ?

It's not a recall, it's on an "as needed/requested basis". It also cures hesitation problems at low RPM, i.e. 2000 RPM.

Which is the low sulfur gas. Is it from what gas station I get it from or something to do with octane. Also about the update for the ECU, I just go to the Subaru dealer and ask them to update my ECU?

It's not an octane thing. Some oil/gas companies sell low sulphur gas. Sunoco is one. In some U.S. states, California I think, only low sulphur gas is allowed to be sold. The ECU reprogramming is done by the Subaru dealer. You have to ask your dealer or Subaru head office about it.

The rotten egg smell is the catalyctic converter unable to properly burn of the excessively rich mixture (too much fuel)

That's why there is an ECU reprogram available. It is a remap of the fuel to air mixture settings. I had a 2002 Impreza TS which had various problems including; the rotten egg smell, hesitation, raw fuel smell. I now have a 2003 Impreza TS which has none of those problems which I think is because of the newer ECU firmware.

How does it cost to have the dealer do this?
