Default Seem To Be Running Rich

MY02 Impreza RS
Only mods are Injen CAI, Stromung Dual Muffler, Kartboy SS(doesn't apply to this situation)

The tips of the muffler are showing a thick layer of "ash" and its only been on for a few months. I thought that with the CAI and Muffler that i would be running more on the lean side...

I think the ECU is programmed to run rich.....and adding that stuff changes the measurments the computer is getting so it still run's rich. Someone qualified should speak up though.

I have a 2001 RS w/ Ganflow intake and scoobysport exhaust. I get a lot of soot buildup on my exhaust tip. The car backfires and pops when I let off the gas.

What can I do to fix this?

I know for a 98-99 RS an AFC would fix this. I heard that the 00-01 will learn around the AFC.

The pops and backfires are characteristics of the boxer engine. Enjoy them.

As for running rich, my S-AFC helps, but only on higher throttle. So... at lower throttle, I still run a bit rich. My tip gets soot on it all the time. I just clean it off. The only other way I can think of to reconcile this is to get a programmable ECU and tune it well.

But you won't need that. This isn't anything to really worry about.

BTW... D-Rock is rice.

So a S-AFC will work fine on a 01 RS? I guess I'll try to buy one this weekend when I'm down at Pepboys buying quality performace parts.

Next weekend I'll be in DownEast Maine. I'm hoping to get some spirited driving in on a few logging roads and blueberry fields. If I can keep my car out of the pucker brush I'll be doing good.

I hope to make it to the Club Rally Dec 7-8. Are you going? Are you crewing for anyone? Maybe I should rent a condo at Sunday River.

My "crew" and I are trying our best to get out there. It's a financial thing though. We're all broke. If we can find a place to stay for free, then we'll be able to make it. Otherwise, we're stuck.

I'll rent a condo at Sunday River, so you don't have to worry about a place to stay. Lets go drink some beers and watch some rally cars!
