Default O2 Sensor Malfunction Code

Hey all. I've asked a few people about my problem, but looking for second or third or fourth oppinions.

Anyway, as of about 2 weeks ago, I've been getting a CEL for O2 sensor malfunction bank 1 sensor 2. I have had the CEL about 3 times so far, after I cleared it, and it started 2 weeks ago, I got another one after a week, and the third a few days after the 2nd.

I could believe that my sensor is dead, but looking around in OBD-II, I found that it is giving readings, varying between .33 and .32 volts at idle. This is normal I suppose.

I don't know why I'm getting the CELs, and I need to get my car inspected before the end of the month.

Do you know which code it is? There are codes that cover things
like slow response, or heater circuit etc, that would indicate a
failing sensor even though it is still giving what appear to be
normal values.

Stu.

I have Alex Peper's OBD-II (www.obd-II.com I think) and it only says the malfunction code, it just said malfunction bank 1 sensor 2.

That's unfortunate that it isn't more specific. The two "malfunction"
codes for Bank 1 Sensor 2 (the rear one) are:

P0136 O2 Sensor Circuit Malfunction (Bank 1 Sensor 2)
P0141 O2 Sensor Heater Circuit Malfunction (Bank 1 Sensor 2)

Both of which would indicate that the sensor is dying/dead, especially
if they keep coming back after a reset. That's what happened to
me when my front one died. The CEL kept coming back more
and more frequently until I changed it. I don't know if there is
anything else you can check before having to replace it.

Unfortunately, the rear sensor is the more expensive of the two
(here it is $275 Cdn ).

Good luck...Stu
